I'm curious as to why pre-season comes before out-season or it may just be semantics.
I think of out-season as the winter months.
Hey Melissa,
I'm the one who puts EN athletes into their training plans according to their current fitness, their race calendar for next year, etc. With regards to the things I consider when I put people into the PS vs OS plan:
We like to "mass" our team into 2x OS starts dates: the November OS, which started Oct 27th, and January OS, which will start on Jan 5th. It's very, very powerful, on a number of levels, to have nearly everyone doing the same thing at the same time. Also, over time, we've learned it's just a bad idea for people to start the OS "on their own," ie, someone starting the OS in the middle of the month, as they'll miss out on the team mojo, and in December. In our experience, about half of the people who start their OS in December end up restarting in January. The holidays can be rough.
The OS is tough and we start with testing right out of the gate. Some people may or may not be ready for that, physically and / or mentally / they need a break, etc.
And so the farther we get from the NovOS start date of Oct 27th, the more likely I am to put new athletes into some weeks of the PreSeason, then probably the Run Focus Plan, and then start the OS on Jan 6th.
Also, when I have athletes describe their training for the last 8wks as being "not very consistent, I'm getting off the couch, getting over an injury, etc," I'm very reluctant to put them in the OS, for obvious reasons.
In short, I do my smart guy thing to decide who is/who is not a good fit to start the OS now, based on a number of variables.
Thanks for the quick reply Rich! Makes perfect sense and I like the idea of being on the same page as many as far as seeking encouragement and advice in the forums AND no way would I be ready for the OS phase right now.

I appreciate the explanation. Go TEAM!
Yup. And the deeper and deeper we get into the OS, the more of these smart guy decisions I need to make when deciding how to structure the seasons of our new athletes.

So that must mean you are the brains and Patrick is the beauty of this operation.
Okay - I'll stop now.
