Travel to Coz w Nutrition Stuff

So I stopped by the UPS Store to see if I should ship any stuff to Cozumel, rather than carry it on the plane.  They told me pretty much anything that is food will be confiscated by Mexican Customs if shipped to the hotel.

Anyone have experience with this, or know if they will take food from you if it is in your bags on the plane?  If so, how is everyone dealing with this?  I can't seem to get the gels they say they will have on course to try them out and don't want to try them during the race for the first time.

Basically, I want to get gels and Gu Chomps, maybe some recovery powder/drink to Cozumel so I don't have to rely on what we can get there.

Never been to Mexico before, so no idea what to expect.  We are flying in to Cozumel directly from the States.

  • When I did the race there 2 years ago, I put everything in my suitcase (in multiple ziploc bags in case they leaked). I know I took powerbars, gels, bloks, apple sauce, protein powder, powdered sports drink, and possibly even some ensure. My suitcase was like my personal minimart for sports nutrition. Last time I flew into Cancun and in customs we pushed a button that determined whether your bag got searched. Mine didn't. My husband's did. Not sure if they would have taken the stuff it it was my bag.

    This year we're flying direct into Cozumel. I plan on doing the same thing since it worked before. I think it's okay to do since it's for personal use, etc. but I can't say for certain. Not sure what other people's experiences have been like.
  • Thanks Jennifer.  Did you 'declare' it on your customs forms?

  • That's a good question. I don't remember. :-|||COL|||2014-11-06 14:13:53.507
