Body Weight Scales

I have had a Tanita for 5 yrs . I'm In the market for a scale that syncs automatically with Training Peaks .   I know there has been some discussion in the past about Withings Scales but I think a lot of people had problems getting them to be compatible with TP.  Can anyone make a recommendation for a new scale with this option?

  • Tim I have a Withings WS-50 and it works absolutely bulletproof without any issue until now!
I've not had a single issue with getting TrainingPeaks synced fully automatic.
Would totally recommend it for anyone!!
  • My Tanita went about 4 years and now the body fat is three times where it was and percent water is down. Not sure what to do now. Reset it. Changed batteries.
  • Stefan, can you help me with "instructions for dummies"on how to get the Withings sink with TP?

  • I have a Withings as well. It synchs with TP automatically, as well as with MyFitnessPal and many other apps. I really like it and have had no problems. Three other people in my family use it and it has no trouble detecting who is who. I had a Tanita scale for a long time which required a separate module on the counter or a Garmin to read out so I therefore needed two scales because no one else could figure out how to use it. Now with the Withings everyone can use the same scale. Life is better!
  • Does the Whithings have body water?
  • @Robert my quick research on Withings says NO to the hydration percent... But found that to be quite variable with the Tanita anyway....

Thanks all just ordered a Withings WS-50
  • @Robert - no in fact Withings doesn't have body water but you can choose to get "Lean body mass" and "Fat mass" instead of just "Fat %" which is very handsome in my opinion!

@Juan - Just login to your Withings account and goto https://healthmate.withings.com/partners - Here you can easily setup TP sync image

@Tim - you will love it image
  • Withings. I have almost 5 years of data. You download a CSV file with every data point from the withings site.
  • Wait....so, are you guys saying that body weight matters?

  • Lol Jeff!

My "nice" scale (nice=lower weights) at my Lake home which will be my forever home this summer is dead.  I should replace it, but the accuracy of this beast sounds intimidating.  Ugh.  More data points lol.  But I suppose if I actually want to race at my race weight I should acquire one. Damn it.

  • Resurrecting this post—I’m assuming a lot has changed in three years. I had a Tanita (don’t remember which model, but not WiFi) that died a few months ago. Have an old digital scale that won’t die, but needs to be replaced. Been tracking my weight past few weeks, and have felt that the scale registers high. Confirmation today—4 lbs higher than drs. office. Anything new out there that people can recommend? Thanks!
  • I've been using the Fitbit scale, Aria. It auto uploads via wifi to the Fitbit App. It can also connect to other fitness apps/trackers, like Zwift. The last time I checked, DC Rainmaker recommends the Aria or the Withings scale.
  • Ha! @Al Truscott But does it have WiFi?
  • Thanks, Derek, I’ll ck out both on DCRainmaker.
  • Haha, I own an older Withings scale, and just this month I could no longer access the app on my phone.  Doing some research, it looks like Withings was sold to Nokia in 2016, so now everything runs through a new Nokia app, which means I lose all my weight and BP info from the past.  Downloaded the new Nokia app (which incidentally got really shit reviews) and can't get the scale to talk to my phone.  Still trying to figure it out.  Seeing how tech savvy I am NOT lately, this should just add to my tech-angst.
  • Update, apparently all my Withings data and login information was ported over to Nokia health dashboard, so a seamless transition for once.  Now to link the scale with Zwift.
  • Good to know, @Jeff Horn I’ll prob end up going with the Withings.
  • It has really worked pretty well @Alicia Chase.  I have saved profiles for wife and kids, and it recognizes each pretty well when they step on the scale
  • I have a Withings. No problems at all with the changeover to Nokia. In fact the in IMO the Nokia app is an improvement over the old one. Easy to link to TP & Zwift.
  • Anyone have feedback on how accurate the BF% measurements are on the Nokia.  I usually make a trip to LTF and get on the InBody, but would rather do this on my schedule at home.

@Mark Stahlkopf does your Withings still update to TP? Mine stopped at some point in the not-so-distant past...

  • @Rich Stanbaugh Yes it does. The last time I checked in was 1-25-18. I've been afraid to step on is since :-)

Do any of you know the answer? ^^
  • I ordered the Nokia/Withings. Got a good deal on eBay. Should be arriving Thursday.
  • Got my Withings/Nokia today. Easy set up. @Gary Lewis don’t know the answer to your question, but I had a Tanita scale, and the body fat reading varied quite a bit depending on how hydrated I was. Be interesting to see what I get from the Withings.
  • ...I had a Tanita scale, and the body fat reading varied quite a bit depending on how hydrated I was...
To me, this is a feature, not a bug. Body water changes much more rapidly than fat content,  and staying hydrated day-in, day-out, especially @2500-3000 meters elev, is critical to sustaining a consistent training program. I obsess about my body water % the way some people do about fat %, I guess.
  • @Al Truscott Agreed. Both the Tanita and the Withings give body water and body fat as separate measurements. @Gary Lewis wondered how accurate the body fat measurement is. Because both scales use electrical impedance to measure body composition, hydration can affect the body fat number on a day-to-day basis. At least, this is what I noticed for the Tanita. Only had the Withings a day, and for some reason, it didn’t give me body composition numbers this morning—just weight.
  • @Gary Lewis I have 10 years of the InBody stats cause it's free at my work gym....and I have a withings too.  IMO it's like the different power meters - i.e. consistency on measurements.  In looking at my numbers they are pretty consistent in terms of differences.  Usually the InBody had me about 4-5 lbs heavier as I did it mid day, while Withings had me less.  From a body fat % the differences were always consistent.   It's hard to really compare the two unless you take your Scale with you....and do them side by side.  Which now that I type this maybe i'll do some time. :)
Happy to do a test for you if you want..The gym laughs at me every time I go in for the measurements as I never want to talk with them about the results and then I tell them I have a spreadsheet with numbers dating back to 2007!
