NBC Premier Viewing of 2015 Kona Championship

I ended up going to the NBC Premier of the 2015 Ironman Kona Championship in NYC at the Paley Center for Media last night with a few of my local club members.  Right when I walked in the door and checked in I turn around and who do I see.  Fellow ENer  Leslie Schneider.. I always seem to run into Leslie everywhere I go!

Very nice event.  Open cocktail bar and horderves before the viewing.  Mirinda Carfrae, Ben Hoffman (2nd place male pro), Apolo Anton Ohno, Dave McGillivray (Race Director of the Boston Marathon), and Lisa Hallet (co-founder of the "Wear Blue - Run to Remember") were there.

You can see Rinny and Apolo right behind me in the background.

During the viewing there was I think a quick glimpse of Coach Patrick entering the water near the beginning of the viewing.  Then towards the end there was another quick back shot of someone (I think Tim Cronk) running away from the camera.

After the viewing there was a Q and A with all the guest then we were able to speak with each of them get pictures.  Rinny was super nice and it was pretty cool meeting Apolo who finished his first Ironman in sub-10, but what do you expect from a multiple gold medalist Olympian and also Ben Hoffman.  I asked Rinny what her FTP was and she was like "Wha?!?!?.. I don't know what you mean!"  HA!  Then I rephrased it and she said she is about 4 watts/kg and averages about 210 watts in a race.  5' 3" and puts out 210 watts.. Pretty awesome in my book.  After that we got kicked out of the viewing theater and moved up into lobby entrance for a few other photos and talking.

As we left they had gift bags for everyone who attended which inlucded a Ironman backpack, iPhone fitness band, Ironman backup battery pack, an Ironman "Anything is possible" blanket and Ironman Foundation hat.

Pretty cool and overall a great evening!

  • Thanks for the update.sounds like a fun time.
  • Very cool.  Can't wait to watch the broadcast this saturday!

  • The Australian version - using the same ESPN footage as NBC, except w Greg welch and PNf providing commentary - is up on youtube already.

    Kienle and Carfrae win.
  • Actually the final cut is different from NBC version. It is all from the same footage reels , but pieced together differently. The Austrailan version has a back shot of John Withrow getting his numbers on at time 1:12-1:14 which wasn't in the NBC version.
  • Thanks for the update. Did anyone else other than Leslie and Darren go? I did have a thread that posted we had slots and that all you had to do is contact my contact.
  • Pretty cool to get to attend the premier viewing! I can see WTC HQ looking out my office window in Tampa and they don't do anything like that locally...the bastards. I'll just have to watch it on TV lilke all the other peasants. image

Also, I think Hoffman and Corbin win in the NBC version.

  • Hey Brenda, Darren and I were the only EN'ers unless someone was in disguise.  It was nice to see the coverage on the big screen and hear from some of the athletes.  I hope they do this again next year!
  • So cool! And I must say, Miss Leslie is looking fabulous!!! image
