Training report- Carrie Chavez OS

Many of you don't know me but I have been a teammate for a long time :-). The community here has grown exponentially in the last few years. I have been training with the plans on my own as I have not been racing Ironmans for a few years. My family has been focusing on other things. It is hard to plug in to a group when not training for a specific event. Even this OS I started early in the beginning of October this year.

Today I retested my FT and improved 17 watts in 7 weeks!! Holy Cow!! A lot for a little peep!! I have to say the workouts have been hard. I really needed this improvement to help me validate all the effort. The workouts that I struggled through and somehow finished, the times I could not hold my numbers but I tried anyway and gave myself grace. It all paid off, There were days I wondered how could I improve??? Then one day like today you feel good, you cover the power numbers with a towel and you just push push push!!! And voila- you pop a new FT!!

I just wanted to share that it pays to keep plugging along.

I wish you all the ability to be patient with yourself and to keep going. I guarantee you that NO MATTER WHAT - you are doing WAY more than you would have done slogging out easy winter rides :-).

  • Carrie Chavez -- good to hear from you after quite a while!! Keep at it!!
  • Carrie there are still lots of us from way back kicking around.  Good to hear work still works. Feel free to post up workouts in the NOS forum and keep the rest of us honest.

  • Carrie!! Thanks for checking in...so great to hear from you. How is it possible you can give me warm fuzzies over the web like that. I can totally identify with the hard work...I am already dreading my next trainer session, but I know that I am getting just that...much....better each time...can't wait to see what the future holds. Hugs to your wonderful family from Team McCrann!
  • Carrie - wise words, well said.

  • Carrie...Nice to see you back posting again.  Welcome back and hope you and Steve are doing well.  Congrats on the FTP increase.  Well done.  Work works.  You just proved it again.
  • Thank you everyone for your comments. I really appreciate it. Such a nice group of people in here. Nothing like coming home to old friends.

I am in week 9 of the OS and finally had a chance to do my run test at a local 5K. It went well and I was reminded how freaking out of breath, 5K pace is :-). Big improvement from where I started 9 weeks ago. Up 4 points from a 44 to a 48 Vdot. 1:30 off my first test. THIS PROGRAM WORKS!! My long runs are where I really see it. Not so much in my top speed but in my ability to run strong for a long time. All of my long runs are 45 sec/mile faster now than pre OS. My history with EN is I was once a 52 back in 2010-11 so I am excited to be making progress back to there. Over the last 2 plus years I have had lots of set backs- illnesses, an ankle sprain and work injuries that would stall my fitness and actually take a bit away. I kept fighting back and never gave up. You can't give up. Some folks here improve year to year and never experience set backs and that is awesome. If you are like me and have had set backs- one nugget I can share is- don't compare yourself to where you once were. I was very fast in my 20's and early 30's. I spent my late 30's and early 40's trying to get back to being "fast". It robbed me of the joy of my current race and current level of fitness. Now at 46 it is like something clicked and I won't let myself go there. I am celebrating all my efforts and any improvement I can make. So my 20:44 was a PR for age 46!!!! Yay for me. My 10 year old daughter is following in our footsteps and loves to run. I usually pace her but today I gave her some freedom to pace herself. She was only 1:11 behind me!!!!!! OMG!! 21:55 for her. It won't be long before we are outright racing each other. I think I have 1 year until this happens!! I can't wait!!
  • Welcome back Carrie, and congrats on your progress. That future racing is coming up pretty fast if you do Vineman...good luck!
