Cramping Question

Did the NOLA half last weekend and had a PR in spite of quad cramping that limited my run.

Hydrated with G2 Gatorade the day before and morning of race. Took 2x Succeed before race. Drank Infinit mix during bike ( 600 cals/1000 mg Na) PLUS 6x Succeed over roughly 2.5 hours. Drank 80 oz fluid on ride.

Quads started cramping immediately on run so much so that I had to walk to keep from locking up completely. Did NOT overcook bike...rode 80%, which was below my RR rides of 83%.

If/when this happens, the cramping always starts in my quads, and I'm obviously a heavy sweater. Temps that day in NO were around 80 vs 65 ish on training rides.

ANY HELP/GUIDANCE IS APPRECIATED !

  •  Wow, the exact same thing happened to me at NOLA.  It also happened to me at the Longhorn last year.  The cramping was so bad at the Longhorn that I DNF'd.  At NOLA, I ran/walked the entire run and finished.  I drank about 3.5 aero bottles of water, and took in 750 cals of infinit on the bike.  I was well under my goal wattage, so I also didn't go too hard.

I've got a friend that switched to First Endurance's EFS and liquid shot.  He swears by it because of the electrolyte count.  I thought of giving it a shot.

  • William - I suffer from similar problems. I hired a sports nutrionist last year and while I did not eliminate my cramps, I reduced them from major stab-to-the-bone nearly collapse and writhe in agony types to mere annoyances that only stopped me very briefly. Nutshell was 1) ignore all advice to the contrary and aim for 50 to 54 oz liquid on the bike per hour, 2) 1500 mg sodium consumption per hour on the bike, and 3) using magnesium/potassium tablets on the bike and run.

  • Did anything out of the ordinary happen during the swim.  For example "I put in about 2 minutes all out at the beginning to try to get on some legs" or "I watched 'Open Water Swimming' the night before, and decided I just had to try dolphin diving for the first time", or anything like that?

Any big spikes of the watts on a particular section?  What was your VI?

  • what paul said, and consider also revisiting bike fit...are you doing something funky to your rig just pre-race (new saddle, shipped bike seat could be lower, etc).

  • Paul...Thanks, will do.
Mike...nothing strange. 1.01 VI with no spikes over 100%
P....carried bike down in one piece.
Pretty certain its fluids....will verify in half next weekend in Charleston.
  • What about your every-day hydration?  What color is your pee on a normal day? {where are those darn fun icons we used to have?!?!?!?}  If you start the race dehydrated, you can't make it up during the race. . .
