crashed my new bike....suggestions!

Hi all,

Need some help with my bike. I crashed my new bike  at IMFL . I broke the rear derailer off of the carbon frame. Orbea doesn't make that frame (new year) they have a frame with the rear that can be taken off and replaced on my frame. Carfree (thanks Coach R)can do the swap/repair and paint.

I have shimano ultegra 10 speed ,Orbea Ordu DI2

To repair frame ($500.00) and all damaged parts for a 10 speed it is going to run $1300.00

If I want to rebuild to a 11 speed it will cost $2000.00

Should I go to a 11 instead of the 10?

thanks!

Yvette

What parts are they replacing?? What did you damage in the crash?

  • If you have any intention of changing wheels or cranks in the future, then go to 11 speed as the industry has moved on to that standard.
  • I think what Paul is saying is that if you upgrade your bike to 11 speed, you also have to upgrade your wheels to 11 speed. That might involve just the cassette change or might also require a hub or hub adapter change.
  • Coach Rich, Did a number on my bike in the crash

here is what I need:Here is the breakdown of the price of a 10 speed
    rebuild as opposed to

    an 11 speed rebuild.

    10
    Speed:

    *Calfee repair    $500

*Shipping to and from Calfee $100

    *10 speed rear derailleur  $ 243

    *Shifters:  $207

    *Etube:  27

    *Chain: $32

    *Labor:   $150

    *Shipping back to you $50

This option would run you around $1308 before tax.

To upgrade this bike to 11 speed the following is the price quote:

    *Calfee repair:  $500

*Shipping to and from Calfee:  $100

    * 30.00Rear Derailleur:  $270

    *260.00Front Derailleur:  $ 260

    *3.00 Chain:  $35

    * 23.00Shifters:  $230

    *3.00 Etube:  $30

    Cassette:  $100

    Crank: $330

    *Labor:  $150

    *Shipping: $50

This option would run around $2,055

  • Paul and Robert, Thanks. I am checking in to my new race wheels. the front one was not damaged but the back one was . I sent it back to Remolds for repair.  I asked the bike shop about being compatible for the 11 and he said the new wheels were . I need to double check before I do anything.  Thanks for your input, I need all the help I can get.

Considering sending the frame to my local bike shop and have them rebuild it.  This would save $100.00 on ship costs.

  • Now I get it...if you want 11 speed now, they have to change the cranks, cassette, etc...which is why it is so much cheaper. If you have 10 speed wheels already you would save a bundle. Eventually, everything is going to shift, so the question is with this repair, how long do you expect to keep the bike. Since it has been wrecked it's probably best to keep it till it really is worn out, and the next one can be 11 speed. That points to saving the money and sticking with the 10 speed so you don't have to buy a new 11 speed crank, front derailleur, and cassette just to be on par with the latest technology.

BTW, I have 3 10 speed bikes (1 road, 2 tri) so I am not incentivized to switch, but I may get a new road bike in the future and that will be 11 speed.
  • Hi all,

My frame was repaired from Calfree.

I am going to change from 10 speed DI2 Ultegra to the 11 speed DI2.

not sure what to go with DI2 Ultegra or Dura Ace. need your input please?n

I was reading a review that said to swap out the ultegra crank for the  dura ace crank and keep everything else ultegra. any thoughts on this?

    thanks

  • I have Dura-Ace Di2 on my bike but if I could do it again I would go with Ultegra Di2. I had no choice at the time I bought my bike as Dura-Ace was the only Di2 option when I pre-ordered my 2014 Trek Speed Concept. The price difference is extreme. Dura-Ace is 2x the price.
  • Also, there is a mid length Ultegra Di2 rear derailleur, which allows for an 11-32 11 speed read cassette. That's what I've got now, no excuses for not spinning up a hill.

  • Bob, what besides the price is you opinion of Dura Ace?
  • Thanks Bob and Al.
Al, if I go with 11-32 will I be ok on the flats?

    IMO, YES

Some people worry about the "gaps" between cogs in a wide range cassette like this, meaning you might have to pedal 80 rpm in one gear, vs 94 in the next higher one, while going the speed/watts you want. I'm not one of those people...meaning Inprefer to ride st the watts I want, and let the cadence sort itself out.

An 11-32 gives you maximum options for all gradients and speeds you might encounter.

Bob, what besides the price is you opinion of Dura Ace?

I think it's fantastic.  I've been using Di2 since early 2011 (had first gen Di2 on my previous tri bike).  It's just expensive and I just can't see a justification for paying for the Dura-Ace over Ultegra.  It's a bit lighter but we're only talking a couple of ounces for about twice the price.

  • Thanks everyone for your help!

I have decided to go with the Ultegra Di2/11speed and the 11/32.

@ Bob: would love to go with the Dura- Ace. I couldn’t pull the trigger on the Dura Ace. Considering I spent $7500.00 on my new bike, power, race wheels, helmet, Garmin 910 and this year. Then trashed it during IMFL this year. A lot of repairs, had to fix the frame/paint,/all new Di2 ,crank, derailleurs, went with 11 speed because I had to replace the parts anyway, new helmet/new spokes on race wheel/new tri clothing/jacket and the list continues.

@Al: I am going with the 11/32 based on your input. In addition, this summer I rode the course at IMChoo and discovered there were two hills that the 11/32 would have helped.

    2015 is the year!
