The 2014 Turkey Trot Race Report Thread

Many of us are running some flavor of race or other event in order to earn the right to embarrass ourselves at the table tomorrow. I have a clean pair of sweatpants (elastic waistband, natch) and a fine Belgian ale at the ready, but before the gluttony commences I'm running a local 5k with Dino, Peter, Jonathan R and probably others from my tri club.

Running on Thanksgiving Day?

Post up an RR here, with pics, and tweet using #en4keys to have your pics appear on the dashboard widget!

Ran the local turkey trot with the boss and the boy this morning (teen girl wanted to sleep and was too embarrassed by dad's tiny run shorts). Ran it last year in 20:46. With all that Z4 stuff we do and with 5 months of run durability under my belt, ambitious goal was to break 20 for the first time in 7 years. Steady 6:30s + sprint should get me close. Did first mile in 6:22, felt pretty easy. Figured the pain would start during the second mile, but that one went by in 6:24 and it wasn't difficult either. So, at the Mile 2 marker, I said "F it" and just ran hard without looking at the Garmin again. Passed about 10 people, caught the women's leader in the chute, but didn't want to be that guy and just cruised across behind her. Last mile was 6:06. 19:23 is a very surprising PR. Not sure if I paced it brilliantly or stupidly, but new vDot is now right under 52 - a number I never thought I'd hit when young, let alone as an OF. Won my AG, probably 15 or so OA. Goal for the rest of the day is to consume a week's worth of food, a month's worth of booze, and enjoy time with family and friends. Happy turkey day to all.
  • Ran our local Turkey Trot (with 3500 others). First mile was 1' slower than goal (9') due to the traffic (people, when they say strollers to the back, they mean it!). Miles 2 and 3 were within 10" of goal, then had to slow 100' from the finish line because of people posing for pictures. First time I've done this TT; I'll probably look for a less crowded one next year...

Now to warm up from the 25 degrees and light snow, then gorge myself...
  • Ran a Turkey Trot 8k in 32:11 although course was long and should have been more like 31:40. Came 22nd out of ~2000 runners overall and 9th of ~300 in M3039. Age-up can't come quickly enough...only one 40 year-old finished ahead of me...

There was a 5k that started 30 mins after the 8k. My kids were doing that so after the 8k I joined the 5k at the back and pushed a stroller while running beside one of my other daughters.

    Time to eat.

Pushed the youngest 2 in a jog stroller through slushy roads. Felt like Rocky training in Siberia. 22:30ish. Everyone burned a few extra calories keeping warm - 8 degrees, with a -4 windchill...

    Happy Thanksgiving!
  • Sorry, didn't realize a family turkey trot pic was required. Here it is:

  • I did the La Canada YMCA Turkey Trot in CA with Coach Rich, Dino and Jon. There was also a many more guys from the local tri club. The race is an out and back with 160 ft elevation going out. I also brought my parents, my wife, 4 of my siblings, and some nephews to race with me!

After a nice warm up with the fellow ENers I lined up and the front. I very poorly paced this race. I totally blew up on the 160ft climb and suffered the whole way back. I ended up with a near constant pace even though there was a big elevation change. I overly optimistic that I could let gravity carry me back at a quicker pace.

I ended up 3rd in M30-34 age group and they gave me a pie at the end!

  • Great Turkey Trot in Granville,OH where I live. It's a very nice "New England like" village close to Columbus.

2500 people or so. Finished 40th and achieved my under 20min goal for the day at 19:56 based on my Garmin (but they had 19:50 in the results!)

Did it together with my 10 yr old and my wife. They did well too in spite of the freezing temps and snow showers

    Great Day in family !

  • That looked like a nice pie....
  • Ran the turkey trot in my hometown where I grew up. It has sort of become a tradition over the past few years. Race temp was mid 20's with sun starting to peak through the clouds. Ran the 10k with the goal of seeing if I could hold pace near 7:10 and to get a better gauge for 1/2 marathon i'm running next weekend. Running on a VDOT of 45.5 earned around 2 weeks ago. I currently in the 11th week of a 12 week run focus plan to end next week with a half marathon.

Started in the 1st corral and started running, wind at back and slight downhill to start. Mile 1 7:09. Felt good, wanted to bridge a gap so I wasn't out breaking wind, mile 2 7:02. Miles 3/4/5 were all into the wind. I knew this going into the race and planned to find someone going a little faster than I could on my own and stick behind them so they could block the wind. The strategy worked and I could really feel the extra speed without the extra cost of the work. Those 3 miles were run at 7:11, 7:10, 7:10. Just before 5 mile marker I ditched the rabbit, and turned with the wind at my back. Mile 6 was 7:05 and the final .2ish was 6:52 pace slightly uphill.

Total time 44:37 which is tied for my PR. Negative split the run 22:24 and 22:13. VDOT of 45.7.

Finished 5/66 in AG, 58/1043 OA

Happy thanksgiving to everyone! Next up - half marathon in 10 days to finish the season.

    Here is the run:

  • Ran the ORIGINAL Turkey Trot, 8 miler, in downtown Dallas, with close to 40,000 people!

8:21/mile pace (1:07:##), which is slower than what I think I'm capable of - and have been trained for lately. Had some rough miles in the middle, when my left shin acted up a little bit (an old bowling injury, seriously).

Justified the 3 hour drive to Abilene to seriously indulge in some Turkey and fixings.
  • I have usually run the Dallas Turkey trot 8 miler,  but there is a Trot closer to my house and they have a doggie division and my canine gets her very own bib and a bandanna. There is a 5K and 10K option.

Last year we finished in 27ish minutes starting way at the back. This year I lined up closer to the front but off to one side. Gun goes off and dogzilla takes off at a sub 7 pace which is entirely too rich for my blood, after much yelling she settled into a 7:30 or so pace  I stopped at a water stop around mile 1, but turns out they only had gatorade (wtf). Next mile involved a poop break and two pee breaks (for the dog that is :p) 9:30 pace. My first time running in a race with a bag of poop. Mile 3 we came up to a water stop, got some water for her and then off we went. She was starting to tire a little and then a guy came up behind us with two boxers. What?? Be passed? Oh hell no. So off she went all out till she was sure they were well behind,  then we ambled in to the finish. 25:20, almost two minute PR for Pepper over last year.

A good fun run for me.

  • I volunteered at  the Winnetka Turkey Trot.  Hauled cases of water, set up tables, directed cars into parking spaces, cleaned up after the race.  Fun!  Then went for my first easy jog since IM AZ.  2 miles in 19:00.
  • Smacked my foot into a curb twice within 24 hours sherpaing at IMAZ (one time in sandals) - black and blue big toe - may lose a toe nail - opted to volunteer at our local turkey trot instead!
  • I ran the 5k turkey trot in my hometown-Kansas City. Actually it was in Overland Park KS on the Sprint campus which sponsers the race. 25 degrees at the start -a little different than Arizona!
We have been going back to KC for thanksgiving for years so this race has become a tradition for me.
This is the first year that they physically separated the stroller/walkers from the competitive runners so I actually could race this one.
I started midway between the 8 and 10 minute milers. This was my first run since AZIM so wasn't sure how I would feel but my legs were feeling recovered.
After a slow trot at the beginning I started racing and was amazed at how many people I passed. I felt good and recovered.
time: 25:34 for about an 8:10 pace-vdot 37.5 which is down from this year's high of 39.
But I just got an email that I placed 3rd in age group! I haven't placed in a foot race since my very first 5k labor day 1998 in Davis, CA
Sorry I can't post the pre race pic of my son and I-can't get the format right
