Balancing Work and Training

OK, so i am running into challanges balancing work and training.  What can you all recommend?  I am working about 12 hour days and working out is so hard to do at night and waking up early is so much harder.  Thoughts????

  • My first question would be if this is a temporary really busy patch at work that you can get past and get on a more open schedule, or is this just how it is going to be. Is your day flexible at all? Like can you sneak in a run at lunch or some other time? Run or bike commute an option? Having your life as organized as possible to not waste any time is key, but obviously easier said than done. Sleep is also important. Love to hear what others say, as I struggle with this!
  • I have a 55 mile commute so my work day is about 11 hours when you factor in work + driving.

I usually do my workouts as soon as I'm home from work, which I find helps. I don't know if that's possible for you or not. I also don't have kids, so my family obligations are a bit less. Doing my workout right away also means that I get a bit of post work - post stupid driver decompression time. I also make sure all my workout stuff is ready in the morning before I leave to make things as easy as possible for myself when I get home.

    Good luck!

  • Getting up early...4:30 am is the only way I can guarantee an uninterrupted workout. The alarm goes off and I say "don't think just move". I too have a 55 mile commute and a long day. My kids are grown but they still call or come by...just not at 4:30 am. It means cooking on the weekend for most of the week, being completely packed up the night before and getting to bed around 9-9:30. But it gives me the evenings free for family and friends. I found a YMCA on the way to work that opens at 4:45 am so I can swim or TM run in the dark. It's doable, just not easy on the cold dark mornings. Good luck!
  • I have to do early mornings as well. My work days are 10-14 hours with an added one hour commute on each end. I'm usually up between 3:30 and 4:30. I get my workout stuff ready the night before and have been known to sleep in my workout clothes to make it brainless when I get up. I occasionally have a swim to do in the evenings, but I am usually fried by the end of the day. I have to prioritize the workouts and probably only get in about 80% of them. I rarely swim more than twice a week in race prep. I have just resigned myself to the fact that I can't do it all.
  • it is temporary. However, i will be experiencing more of the same craziness every 3 months (I am an in sales and quarter ends are crazy).

I know i need to just get my behind out of bed, but i really enjoy my sleep. Also the long 1.5 hour workouts are not going to be fun because i am beat after them (wanting a nap around lunch time) I also know that making 100% of the workouts is not possible.

but i really really want to do well in my IM in September. I know Work Works, and i know that by doing my workouts today will get me to my goals for the IM. So i need to just suck it up…
