books

I am looking for a good, inspiring book on endurance sports. Can be any sport. I have some downtime coming up and also a 19 hr train ride. Any suggestions?

  • Not an endurance sport book but what may be the ultimate endurance adventure ever..... the story of Ernest Shackleton in 1914 Antarctica.

    Endurance by Alfred Lancing

I've read that book at least 20 times over the years.... I never tire of it. It's just that good of a story, taken from the diaries of the men who lived it.

+1 ... that book got me thru a week long bike trip thru NE OR in 100F weather

Others...Unbroken by Lauren Hillenbrand, Slaying the Badger (Lemond vs Hinault), Iron War, Born to Run, Winterdance (Iditarod), Into Thick Air (bicycling to the lowest pt on each continent), Murakami's What InTalk About When I Talk About Running (musings about writing and uktra running by a great novelist)
  • Racing the Sunset, Scott Tinley

    Ultramarathon Man, Dean Karnazes

    To the Edge, Kirk Johnson

  • X3 Unbroken. Read it before the movie
    X2 born to run
  • I've read and enjoyed a few of the ones mentioned (born to run, ironwar, what I talk about when I talk about running). Also liked Chrissie Wellington's autobiography a lot, Iron Heart was a good story too.
  • Even if you aren't into mountaineering this is a truly amazing story - Touching the Void by Joe Simpson (read the book before watching the movie)

  • "Once a Runner" and "Again to Carthage" by John Parker Jr.
YES on unbroken, excellent book. Definitely read before seeing the movie coming out later this month.
"Iron Heart" by Bryan Boyle is a good'un too.
