Arch Pain During/After Running

I've been dealing with arch pain for over 2 months now - right foot only. It only happens during and obviously sore after running. It started after I commenced doing speed work post IMWI. It bothered me so much it sidelined my running for many weeks. I've been biking and doing the stair machine - no problems. For the past 1.5 weeks, I've been back on the treadmill running between 1-1.5 miles. During my recent short treadmill runs, my arch still flares up, but shortly after running, my arch sems to be OK - sometimes I question my own judgement. I wear orthotics for arch support and those are about 2 years old, but appear to be fine - no visible issues with the ortho's. I'm going to the doc next week. My shoes have about 300 miles on them. Finally, I've never had any arch issues before. Any suggestions?

Thank you,
Chris

  • Your shoes are pretty old. As soon as I start to feel anything going on with my feet I take that as an indication my shoes may be getting worn out and it is time to get new ones. I think of it as an insurance payment against doctors, orthotics etc...

  • I'll preface this by saying i'm no expert but I will be bold enough to give a suggestion as I've had similar issues...
I certainly agree with David, I do new shoes regularly as it seems to help stave off any potential issues.
I have had and am still dealing with some arch pain of my own. I have been doing PT for it and that helped a lot. I recommend finding a good PT that specializes in running injuries... I'm going back to the PT this week actually for the first time since IM70.3 Austin in Oct since my pain has come back a bit on my left foot. Good luck!

    Thanks,
    Erik
  • Any morning pain when you first get out of bed? Arch pain is often plantar fasciitis. I recommend regardless of the specific diagnosis:
    1) new shoes (with a good fit)
    2) strengthen the foot muscles- do things like scrunch up a towel with your toes, or pick up small objects with your toes
    3) stretch your calves
And as always, PTs are friends :-)
  • thanks for everyone's input. I will be running out to get new shoes (pun intended!)

@Rachal - no pain in the morning, but not a bad idea about strengthening my feet
