Marathon Chafe (not what you think)

So,  The thing that bothered me most after my IM was a wicked full-thickness burn under my left arm from rubbing on the seam of the armhole of my jersey.  Does anyone else have that problem and how does one avoid the problem?

  • I used to get that (not as bad), and solved it with Body Glide generously applied @ the start of the day. Most IMs also have Vaseline at some (not all) aid stations, and that allows for re-application as desired. Other options include: sleeker fabric, arm coolers, sleeved jersey.

  • Al,
I thought that I lubed up pretty well with body glide and spray Pam but I guess the area that you miss is the area that gets irritated. Thanks, I guess the best answer is be more careful with getting all of the spots greased up.
  • I got that under my armpit on my torso, not on my arm.
  • Running with your elbows out helps some but not entirely.
  • YES! Hate that problem. Body glide like crazy. I remember walking around after a marathon with my elbows out because that was the main killer.
  • In addition to body glide everywhere I'm real careful about my clothing options. I look for tri jerseys that have a large arm hole. And if it doesn't have an arm hole where my arm isn't rubbing the seam every arm swing, then I take it to a seamstress and have the size of the arm hole enlarged. Chaffing is one of our worst enemies!

Me too - and I didn't find it until I hit the shower.

I have one top that I love except for one spot that will chafe - I will put a bandaid on it preemptively.

  • In addition to what others have said, I have found that body glide just doesn't cut it for me. I have gone back to the old school and apply vasoline to any of my "hot spots" and that seems to work.
  • I have that sometime too. Never seems to happen in training, only at races. I usually suffer when I get in the shower afterwards, because I never think that far ahead to body glide the spots in T2.
  • I had the same thing after IM Wisconsin. I assumed that it was caused by my arm rubbing on the HR monitor strap. The arm hole in the shirt would also make sense.
  • Thanks, Great input!
I think I may have to have my EN team top modified. I don't think I have the concentration to hold my arms out for 26 miles. One possible reason that I never noticed it prior to my IM is that I had never run the whole 26 before my race. Forewarned is forearmed for next time though.
  • I have had it on the other side...i.e., on my torso, rather than my sleeve..but same general thing. Body Glide is your friend. :-)
  • i have gotten the same but from the wetsuit not the tri top. It hurts like a mother. So i apply glide to the arm and to the tri top just in case. Also, hate to say it, you may need to try a new top.
