Tom Knight's Macro Thread

Hey coach, thanks for the Triathlon Season Roadmap, super useful and awesome turnaround time.

I had a question about the half-marathon focus early in the season. The NYC Half is definitely an "A" race for me, but I don't want to focus on running exclusively if it means that I'll be digging myself out of a hole for the rest of the season as I work towards IMLP.

My experience in training only running for H2 2014 is that I got a lot faster at running (~4 minute PR at HM distance), but became a pretty crappy cyclist and swimmer. I'm worried about going so far in to the season without building up something of a cycling base.

  • Thomas,

I put you in the HM plan vs the OS due to (1) the description you gave me of the goals you have for the March half marathon and (2) the time between that race and Quassy and IMLP. We can accomplish the same thing by using the OutSeason plan but you'll need to follow the guidance in the OS plan to bump up the long run volume to better fit that half.
Let me know what you think and I'll change it for you.
  • Thanks for getting back! I think that if I can focus on running in the early part of the year and still have time post-NYC Half to build up bike strength, this would be my preferred approach. I haven't seen the running plans on EN, but if there are spots on them for cross-training that might work.

  • One more quick question about the training plans. What is the thinking on rearranging workouts within the week. For example, if I have a swim group that regularly meets on Tuesday, can I adjust swim workouts to fall on Tuesday?

Swim workouts are usually pretty low risk with regards to moving them around on the calendar. Having said that, the solution I recommend is:

    • Post in the Micro Forum your proposed training week. IE, "plan says to do X, Y, Z but I propose to do Z, X, Y, based on blah blah. What do you think?"
    • Patrick can then give you input on that proposed template training week.
    • You guys back and forth to determine an mix of EN workouts that works for both you.
    • You then bust out your #2 pixel to make these changes to your schedule, mentally moving them around on the calendar, etc.

    Good luck!
