under water camera

looking for an underwater camera that can be mounted under the water that would video my strokes. Also looking for a mount that would work with the unit. I seen the Gopro camera but was wondering if any one had any experience using one or what they would recommend before I spend the money on one.

  • Coach P has used a GoPro set up to film us at camps ...

NB: At my local Y, cameras are not allowed in and around the pool; management does not want pictures taken of people who have not given permission, and there are always others swimming, so they just say, no cameras to protect privacy. Make sure you don't run afoul of any such policies.

  • Plus 1 on the gopro. I have one and have used it for lots of underwater footage. I've been trying to coordinate with my swim coach for some video analysis but it has not happened yet. It will probably end up happening sometime in January now.

An excellent resource for product reviews is the dc rainmaker website - http://www.dcrainmaker.com His camera reviews can be found here - http://www.dcrainmaker.com/product-reviews/action-cams
  • Go Pro on a broom stick :-)
  • I recently hired a swim coach who has been doing this for many years.  He videos me with his iphone with a Lifeproof waterproof case.  I have this same case, as I'm on call 1/2 of my life and have to check the phone during swim workouts.  His rationale was that it provided better quality pictures than his dedicated underwater camera.  I'm sure it's not the GoPro newer thingie though...sounded like an older underwater camera of some sort.

The point I'm trying to make is that the new camera phones are excellent quality and everyone has them poolside (even if cameras are forbidden).  The tricky part is mounting....not sure how to do that.  If you had an "assistant" it would be pretty easy and likely would be undetected (if cameras forbidded technically).
