2015 Race Schedule Change?

So I was thinking....  (Uh-oh)  As of right now, I have a HIM on my schedule for late June.  But, would I be better served staying with "Get Faster" or bike or run focused type plans to get in as much "fast" before I start adding the far in training for IMChoo?  Main reasons: 1) As I said, get more "faster" training in 2) Not a lot of great HIMs locally so basically the 6/22 one is it.  3) I think I'll be getting a decent amount of volume in given some early HMs and just cuz I like biking.

I know you don't have to do a half in route to an IM, but wanted to get your thoughts on what is going to give my the most bang for my buck.  (And maintain SAUs as long as possible)  I can resubmit my season plan if you think I would be better off without a HIM.  Here's my plan as it stands now...

Thanks!

  • Sorry, I'm confused. Are you asking me if you'd be better off taking one or both of those halfs in June off of your calendar?
  • I only have one HIM planned (late June). So the question is would I be better off with a little more speed focus prior to ramping up for IMChoo.

    My notes:

My concern (not really a concern, just a comment) with you only having an oly on the calendar in June is:

    1. Will this be a legit enough goal to have you focus on it, keeping your head out of space where you think you're training for an IM?
    2. Will it be legit enough that you'll stay on the ball/stay accountable for a long run?

The value of racing that HIM is that it will create accountability and you're more likely to be focus on training for it in May and June vs training for IMChoo in May and June = burned out by July.

IMO, the considerations for staying in the GF plan are secondary to the considerations above for (1) accountability and (2) keeping your head out of that "I'm training for IMChoo" space.

Finally, the HIM plan still has plenty of intensity and get faster potential that I think you may be discounting. And the length of time during which you'll be putting up legit long runs (ie, for several weeks) will pay off huge when you do switch to the IM plan.

  • Thanks Rich!

    1) I think the Oly in June is def enough of a goal. It is the Quassy Oly which I have done 4 years (last year I did the Half ... never again) I have a strong urge to PR the Oly so def no issue there.

    2) Hmmm, this is the question. Since I dont love running, this may be the problem.....

No worries about me "training for IMChoo" too early either so I think the long run is the big consideration. But since that is the weakness, I should prob do the half....

If you can do the Oly but do an HIM-style long run while training for it, then I think that would be good. IOW, I don't think you need to pay $300-400 to put a race on the calendar that will keep you honest. If you can put a smaller, fun, $$ race on the calendar, but pinky-promise that you'll do 1:30-45 long runs for months and months, that is more than good enough. Make sense?

  • Got the revised plan, thanks!

Did you get my e-mail about the Powertap wheel from Wheelbuilder?

    Thanks!

Yes, will hit you back later today

  • Hey Rich! I've got Quassy Oly on Sat., then I transition to GF plan for about 4 weeks before moving into the IM plan for IMChoo. Question is.... I have several metric century-ish rides on the prelim calendar (trying to get max bike volume, plus, I enjoy them) but that really isn't "in the plan" for GF plan. Is it OK to do a little more if I take the intensity down a notch or 2 for those kinds of events? Should I reach out in the Micro forum for weeks that I have something like that? Thanks!

Always good to do those rides. Just ride, I always find it fun to get with a group and just do a lot of work. I doubt you'll need to make any significant changes to your week to accommodate these rides.
