How to modify your training (incl Nov OS) for the Holiday, Holiday Travel, etc.

So, it's that time of year again when the holidays beckon and your training become a very...very...low priority relative to things like family, eating, presents, eating, relaxing, eating, football, drinking, family, social stuff, eating and perhaps some eating.   Hopefully that's more like what I experience and less of what your holiday is like!

Regardless, it's challenging. The vast majority of you are in the November OutSeason Training Cycle...or you are about to start the January OutSeason Cycle. So for many of you, the pain --> endorphin --> reward cycle is pretty well established...be prepared for some withdrawal!

NOVEMBER OS PEEPS

Do your best to stay fit...you can pick things back up when you get home -- it might take a bike workout or two to get into your rhythm. At a minimum keep your 1 Tempo and your 1 Long Run for the week!

Goal #1 -- Keep the Fire Burning

Even if you can't training according to your plan, you can certainly stay fit. We have an annual Holiday Run Challenge from 12/25 to 1/1 (Sign Up Here) that will allow you to stay focused on being active and keep your equipment requirements to a minimum.

Goal #2 -- Stay Consistent

But even if that challenge isn't on the table, stay active...heck, walking counts!  I'll take a short 30' run a day vs nothing. Seriously.

Goal #3 -- Stay Healthy

The only thing worse than doing some budget version of your current plan is...getting sick so that even when you CAN do your training, you CAN'T because breathing is impossible. Stay hydrated. Sleep. Hand sanitize. You know the drill.

JANUARY OS PEEPS

Since you really haven't started yet we don't have any serious expectations. I suggest you use the Run Challenge for fun and focus...when you return home, you'll have a few days to get your testing set up all ready, and block out your training on the calendar!

If you have specific questions for unique situations, you can hit me in the Micro Forum ^above^ -- otherwise I look forward to stalking you on Strava so I can get motivated!!!

PS -- Please remember, the OutSeason page is live in the wiki here and is chock full of great information! http://members.endurancenation.us/R...aster+Page

  • Another simple solution is to drop into Week 10 of an IM plan, sneak out of the house each day at 6am and try to return by 10:45 before the rest of the family wakes up.
