Your favorite workout headphones

Curious to hear what people's favorite workout headphones are because I'm interested in experimenting, but don't want to spend $200 and feel ripped off when they don't work for me.

The truth is I could live with the Apple EarBuds just fine if I didn't keep shorting out the controller by sweating on them.  OK, the sound isn't exactly audiophile, but it's pretty reasonable (especially given the $30 price point) and they are comfortable and stay in my ears just fine.

So here are my criteria:

  • Must have sound quality and comfort at least as good as the default Apple EarPods.
  • In-line controller and mic (similar in functionality to the Apple ones) strongly preferred, but I might try ones without if there was a compelling case made.  However, I sometimes run etc when I need to be able to answer a call from my daughter if she calls...and I like the double-click-to-skip function.  :-)
  • If it has the in-line controller/mic, it has to be very sweat resistant.
  • And, of course, they have to be compatible with running and not look ridiculous while doing so.  I assume this probably means only ear-bud design.  I'm not going to run in Beats.....

Cheers, Wm

For years, I;ve been using an earlier version similar to the PMX 685i. These are specifically designed for sporting use. This page as several different models, in terms earphone style and with/without inline controls. I use the behind the head/over the ear model as the only ones which stand up to outdoor and treadmill running, as well as weight room use, but YMMV.

  • I like these.... Lots of different silicone covers to fit any ear. Only complaint is that there are a little bulky, but I think that is the norm with this type of headphone and also due to the fact I have pretty small ears...

  • My requirement also includes Bluetooth for wireless use. Here's my favorite.

  • x2 on Jaybird. or are we up to x3?
  • William ...
I love Yurbuds. They don't budge and are great for (trainer) bike and run.

To boot, they have the M-dot logo on them, which helps avoid slowing down and turning my music off in order to tell pedestrians that I'm training for an Ironman.

I can send you an extra pair I got at a race expo if you wish - send me a PM with your mailing details.

  • My wife likes her IM Yurbuds as well. She especially likes them because she can talk on the phone with them since it seems like our daughters always call her when she's on the trainer.
  • For wired, I like the ones Al noted below. He turned them onto me a couple of years back and they are still working well.

For wireless I use nothing but the Jaybirds. I have had these for a couple of years as well and they still work great.

  • Count me as yet another fan of the wireless Jaybirds. They have held up very well in the approx. 1 year I have had them.

I also have a pair of wired Monster isport intensity headphones that I like when I do not use the wireless headphones. They work very well, sound good, and have the controls and microphone on the chord.
  • I have the Jaybird's too. They shorted out after 9 months from sweat damage. The company honored the warrenty and replaced them with a new pair. Sometimes I have a little trouble keeping the ear bud adjusted (slipping), but they include 3 sets of rubber to get them fitted right... maybe it's just me.

  • I'm fine with my yurbud ear thingamabobbers on the standard iphone earpieces. Paid $15 a few years ago for a few pairs and they're going strong. They stay in and don't fall out with all the jostling of my constant dreadmill use.
  • William,

I've been using these for the past year and i have found them to meet all my needs.  They are water/sweat resistant, they are wireless, they fit in your ear but let in ambient sound, and the sound quality is decent, but not great.  I get about 6-8 hours of use before having to recharge.  They are also comfortable and very secure once you have them in place.

Just today i received an email for 50% off bringing the price from $150 to $75.  If you are interested send me your email address and i'll forward you the email invitation i received.

  • Thanks for all the suggestions!
  • I am a little late on this. But i actually think the Yurbuds are solid because of two things.
    1) If i screw them up, i am out $35 to $50. So i am not going to cry about it
    2) i can change out the ear buds (purchase new ones on amazon) on a regular basis to avoid nasty stuff stuck in my ears.

I am interested in the JayBird-BlueBuds.. I will be looking more at them
  • I have seriously tiny ears and almost all earbuds either hurt or fall out. I say almost because I finally discovered Yurbuds Inspire for Woman and although they still occasionally fall out- it's usually because I didn't take time to insert them correctly. They have various option models (with the controls, with speaker, etc).
