Melissa Gelineau's Grand plans

Just wanted to communicate what my goals are for this year and moving forward. When I did B2B in 2012 my goal was to finish. I did in 15:18 and have no doubt I can go faster. My focus was backpacking and lots of running with the a trail marathon and 50K last year.
I accomplished a lot since I started training and racing in 1988. I've raced mountain bikes, adventure racing, trail running and triathlons.
During one of my conversations with Coach Patrick you mentioned that 2015 could be a year of building with 2016, a focus on peak Ironman racing. I think it was something like that.
There is so much I want to do including more ultras, more backpacking and believe it or not, some ATV racing which triathlons thrown in here and there. Having said this and moving toward being able to get back to running, my goal is to have a solid performance at Ironman Chattanooga and satisfaction if that does end up being my last IM.
I'm really enjoying having structured workouts at my fingertips and the EN team as a resource.
Thanks!!

    Hi Melissa,

Sounds good, I think you have the right attitude about all of this. See some recent thoughts here about the lifecycle of the typical Ironman athlete, as it gives you some perspective on what's required for long term growth. I also recently did a podcast on this topic, link is here.

  • Hi Rich,

There is a bike event held annually.  This year it is on June 7, 2015.  The Fletcher Flyer has routes of 100, Metric, 50 or Half Metric.  Which would you suggest, if any, would I register for?  It's road riding.

    Thanks.

    Melissa

  • Go for the 100mi option.

    Good luck!

  • Yikes.  Well, I asked.  I'll register for the century!

Loved your podcast on the Intro to the Three Year Plan.  Spot on!

  • Hi Rich,
I signed up for the century. How in the heck am I going to be ready to put in what could be a 7 hour bike ride at that point in my plan?
    Just asking.
    Thanks.

You'll be fine. I guarantee that in about a month you could hop on a bike and do a century, no problem.

  • Kick ass! If you say it, I will not doubt myself which will be a leap for me!
    Thanks!!
  • Hi Rich,
I signed up for the century on 6/7. I have an opportunity to attend a training weekend in Chattanooga on the weekend of 6/13. Although I would love to attend the EN camp, there is no way I can swing it (hubby laid off for winter).
I believe the plan is to do the River Rat race (2.4 mile swim) on Saturday followed by a run on the course then do one loop of bike course on Sunday.
Would that be okay since I'm doing the century the weekend prior? FYI - I'm doing the century with a friend that is much slower than I.
    Thanks for the guidance.
    Sincerely,
    Melissa

Yes, that sounds like a good plan. Have fun!

  • Thanks Rich. Lost bike training last week due to travel but ran twice. Lost running and bike training up till today due to a cold upon my return.
My running is coming along since returning about a month ago to it after PTT.
I'd like to throw in a beautiful, rolling, climbing metric on 4/25.
    Okay?
    Have a great day Coach!

Yep, sounds good. I'm in the same boat, about to step out for my first run in about 2wks, due to a bad cold

  • Hi Rich,
Any thing other than adhering to the weekly plan in anticipation of the century I'm doing on June 7th? I'm feeling stronger than ever on the bike and look forward to improving more as my plan progresses!
My goal for the century is to get some miles and saddle time while encouraging my friend on her first 100.
April 18th we covered 62 miles in about 4.5 hours. I was definitely tired but felt good during the ride and able to hop in with a few groups that went by us for a while. Couldn't stay because I didn't want to leave my friend behind.
My right foot is doing remarkably well. Seems the more I run (on the road) the more stable it becomes. Patrick doesn't want me testing yet though. My avg speed is 11:30 for 6 miles on hilly roads. I've not been a fast runner in years but feel good about this. I always used to look forward to the last leg of the Sprint and Olympic distance tri's because that is where I excelled in endurance and strength. The last tri's I did in prep for my IM in 2012 pretty much involved hanging on and trying to finish with something left. Long gone is my kick at the end.
I'm satisfied where I am right now and think I hope/plan/will take an hour off my 15:18 B2B IM!
BTW - I'm going to Chattanooga the week after the century to train on the course.
    Thanks.
    Sincerely,
    Melissa
  • P.S.
When I loaded the HIM plan it put me in week 7. I moved it to week one and am now on week 2. Is this correct or should I follow where it appears based on my August 2 HIM?
    Thanks.

Sorry, but I don't see / understand your question?

Yes, I want you to be in wk7 of the HIM plan, not wk2. Please load the HIM plan to end on 8/2 and that should fix it for you.

  • My ? is in the first sentence of my first post about upcoming century. I did have the HIM plan ending August 2 but wasn't sure about which week to be in. I'm bummed that I missed the first two weeks of the plan. I'll reach out sooner next time for clarification. I had to change around my schedule this week and rode 2 hours Wednesday and 2 hours on Thursday with the run assigned for week 2 because my weekend is obligated. I don't think I have it in me to do the HIM race rehearsal. Should I do it next week or forget it and carry on per the plan starting next Monday. I plan to swim, ride :60, run :30 on Saturday and run :60 on Sunday.
    Sorry about that.
    Thanks.

No need to do anything special, ie modify your HIM plan to get ready for the century. You'll be fine, you've easily got the endurance for it.

The timing of the first RR isn't super important so fine to delay that if you need to.

Sorry about the delay, slammed with my Tour of California camp this week. Good luck!

  • Thanks much!

    Thanks much!

    No worries, good luck!

  • Hi Rich,
I'm registered to do the River Rat race in Chatt, TN on 6/13. Since swimming was added to the plan I have been swimming twice weekly but missed once last week. I'm not doing the suggested 3 swims weekly as I'm confident in my ability to have a good swim time on race day.
? Should I do the 2.4 with the minimal training I have under my belt or downscale to the 1.2?
? When I'm running downhill should I keep the quick cadence or open up my stride and use my long legs to help propel me?

    Have a great weekend.
    Thanks.

? Should I do the 2.4 with the minimal training I have under my belt or downscale to the 1.2? There's little risk in swimming 2.4 vs 1.2 and it's a great open water swim opportunity to get in the full 2.4 distance, so I recommend you do that.

? When I'm running downhill should I keep the quick cadence or open up my stride and use my long legs to help propel me? I would be hesitant to consciously open up my stride, as that would result in a significant heal strike and a LOT of pounding on your body. I would run faster by increasing my cadence and just be conscious/careful of throwing that big brake out there.

    Have a great weekend.

    Thanks.
