Training post Rotator Cuff Surgery

Had Rotator Cuff Surgery last friday.

got on the drainer and did 3x6s yesterday, was a bit rough on the legs, but doable.

thinking of following Bike Focused Block for next 5 weeks. planning on going into pool2-3x per week for water running,

any thoughts recommendations from the team? especially those that have had the surgery?

  • Scott, be careful the first 2 weeks post op. You want the incisions to stay dry to prevent infection, so be careful with sweating. Also, dont put pressure on the surgical shoulder for the first 4 weeks. You have to let the surgical site heal. The 'inside' healing takes longer than the 'outside' healing.

  • Well I never had rotator cuff surgery but I have witnessed 2 of them up close and personal (I feel for you right now) and I've gone thru clavicle surgery which is very similar initially... Stay out of the water for 2 weeks to let the skin heal. Ride on your trainer as much as you want , probably a road bike so you can sit up and not use your arms ( I found that difficult on my tri-bike).... Just walk as much as you can with your sling (Heather did her first HM walking with her sling ) .... I have no idea about the water running (how much do you need your arm and at what impact ?) but its probably worth trying after 2 weeks and the doc's permission.... Most of all DO ALL of your PT , that is the fastest way to a full recovery , I know you don't wanna lose that bike/run you built, don't worry it will come back fast , but you gotta recover that rotator ASAP... Oh and ya gotta swim again sometime and all that PT will be needed to get swimming!
