Wrapped up this week with 57 miles , 42 on trails , 8.5 hrs on my feet , some stride work, and 3 x 1 today at roughly M-pace... Due to crappy weather mid-week I skipped a swim and bike and ended up with 4500yds in the pool and 62 miles in the saddle... Feeling pretty good and absorbing all the work... Wish I could say the same for my Heather , I fear she may have a stress fracture from the added distance she has been running (about 25-30% less than me)... She maybe going to the Doc for an extra and some water running coming up..... I have one more week of planned mileage building (around 62 miles) , then a week of about 33% less to absorb the work and recover , then it will be 4 weeks of volume in the 60-70 mpw range...
Very good week for you I must say - been following you daily. Time on your feet on the trails is unbeatable!
I have a hard time getting to trails around here and making it work with my work/kid schedule. Hoping Heather's setbacks are minimal and she gets some quality healing rest. Ann is doing the 1/10 25K with me on she has been hitting her schedule for that. She seems to be very resilient! On 2/28 Ann will go with me to my 50K and she will do another 25K. Both locations are in the TX hill country and over some very nasty terrain. Should be a good challenge.
I had a good week with 5,000+ swimming, 40 miles running, some good bike sessions and just over 12 hrs total. Hurt my left leg Sat running intervals uphill and putting too much intensity in the week but should be running again tomorrow.
Looking forward to the holiday weeks!
Thats a lot of Z4 time in your running last week! Its hard for me to NOT do more speed work but in order to take in all the extra mileage something needs to give and for me that the intensity.... I'll bring it back after ...
Most of the trails I'm running on are really easy (similar to my 50k) but I'm trying to get in some more difficult ones in prep for the 50 miler , they just aren't as convenient.
Ann seems to be very focused so far. I think she actually enjoys it somewhat. Take care of Heather, she could not have a better partner/coach.
I will share something with you. I have mentored a lot of extraordinary people over the past years. One guy I met 5 years ago, smoked two packs a day and no running. He came to me and I gave him a solid marathon plan, coached him over 6 months. He was very focused and mentally off the charts tough like you. Well, he qualified for Boston on his first marathon in Austin. Fast forward a few years and the apprentice becomes the mentor. He is now a 100 mile ultra runner and currently in first place in Texas in a series of 5 100 mile runs this year. Week before last he completed number 4 in just over 15 hours over scary tough terrain. I created a monster - LOL. Anyway, those weekend back to back long runs on the trails, at low intensity are the secret sauce. From my view, keep doing what you're doing, don't let the intensity distract/tempt you.
I will back off of the intensity intervals soon and increase the mileage.
Have a great / safe week and Happy Holidays!
Finished up the running today on mud trails with the boys and 52 miles total to hit my 50 mile goal for the week. Total TSS down from last week as I cut out intensity to ramp up time on my feet. Today was cold at 35 degrees and light winds. Hands and feet a little cold for all of us but otherwise nice to be outside in the forest on the trails.
I have worn the Altra Torin 1.5s twice now and I do like them on the trails.
Also made it about 3/4 way through my book, "Relentless Forward Progress".......good book!
Probably go for a light trainer recovery spin this afternoon.
Next week will be closer to 35 miles running with more intensity on the bike then ramping up for the next block with a 25K scheduled on 1/10 over terrain I am not ready for but, what doesn't kill you..............
Happy Holidays!

Finished up the week with my highest run mileage ever @ 62miles and about 55 was on trails...I have absolutely NO idea how guys can do 60-70mpw while training for an IM????...... most was Z1-2...... strides on my short run xmas day .... and the last five miles today was tempo-ish pace.... 75 miles on the bike, 3900yds in the pool.... This week was my peak week for the mileage build , the last 7 weeks went like this 28, 35, 39 , 45 , 52 , 57 , 62...... Plan to do 40 this week as a recovery/easier week but will try to get on the bike and in the pool more.... Little intensity but not much! After recovery week , hoping to get in 4 weeks of volume in the 60-70mpw range ....
62 miles with most of them trails! Hard to quantify the stress load for that amount of work given the difficulty of trail running. Just completely outstanding! With some focused rest this week while your body absorbs that work, you are going to be killing it in January!!
Way to lead!!
