Marians question on running pace versus heart rate

hi coach,

in doing my run this weekend I was on a course that had some rolling hills. It was difficult to keep both the pace and my heart rate zone on target.  I choose to let heart rate zones versus pace rule the effort.. ( ie a bit slower pace up the hills and faster on the downhills).. did I make the right choice?

  • Marian, I personally use pace as it will teach you how to keep control of your HR (dropping pace means preventing a rising heart rate, etc)...I would use HR for days when Heat is a factor and your "normal" pace zones don't help.

THAT SAID, I don't want you to run your Zone 3 "Mod Hard" pace on the flats at 9:00/mile right up the side of a mountain. A slight hill I'd see that pace slow by 10-15" per mile to 9:15s say...and downhills at 8:45s....
