  • Hi, Terry Betcher from Swan River, Manitoba, Canada. Into my 3rd month with EN. This is my 3rd year of triathlon. Have done 1 sprint, 3 olympics, 2 halfs and made it to mile 100 of IM Canada before getting pulled off my bike with dehydration. Hoping to race Oceanside somewhere around 6 hours. Swimming is my weakest link. Hoping this will springboard me into a successful return to Whistler this summer.
  • Hello - Chris Kuebert from Long Beach, CA - 1.5hrs north of Oceanside. This will be my 4th time doing O-side. Hoping for under 5:30 this year. 2nd year with EN and hoping that I can use all of my EN knowledge correctly. 1st year with EN totally blew the bike up and walked a majority of the run. Staying at the Marriott above the start, should be much easier to get around versus staying in Carlsbad like we usually do. See everyone at the race.
  • Hi There! Joined EN back in October 14 but needed to miss OS due to life throwing me a curveball. Back now and committed to doing Oceanside. It's my 3rd and haven't been able to pull it together for this race. My goal if I had completed OS program would have been under 6:00, however now I'm going to play it by ear.

I'm from Long Beach CA as well. Chris which Marriott, Residence or Courtyard?
  • since Ironman is now signed up with Gatorade, does anyone know what precisely kind of liquid fuel is going to be available at Oceanside?

  • Terry - they usually hand out gatorade endurance formula.  on the bike it is bottle with the twist cap.  Not sure if it has changed since 2013 but that is the page that Ironman links to.  hope this helps.

  • Hi Terry,

I did it last year and they served Endurance in twist off caps and GU for gels.

  • thanks guys,

How cold is the water going to be? Anyone wearing multiple or neoprene swimcaps?  Anyone with boots on?

  • The water is about 63 right now and it was I believe 64 last year (which was crazy warm for that harbor). However, it has been known to be a cold race as Coach Rich has mentioned. I'd pack a few extra caps to be safe and someone else needs to respond about boots because I've never worn them and not sure if IM events even allow them.

My "cold threshold" is 62 and anything below that I get an ice cream headache.
    Sorry East Coasters :-)

  • I am in! This will be my third time at Oceanside. It's early season. So, there's that..... image
  • I too am in! My second time at Oceanside. It will be the first race I have done a second time. I'm excited to see the difference in execution and results an entire season and out-season of training makes. Last year, before I had joined EN, I survived the swim, pushed it too hard on the bike and was walking parts of the run. Smarter execution and better mental toughness this time.

@Terry: I wore booties last year and felt they slowed me down, both while swimming and in T1 while trying to take them off. Entering T1, my feet were not cold, but neither were my hands and I didn't wear gloves. This year I will go without.

@Dino: do we get to touch your custom built bike? image
  • Thanks for the heads up Bob.
  • Bob - if I bring it you can ride it! It likely will not make the tho. I think my ride will say "P5" on it the race. image
  • I'm in! This will be my first time racing Oceanside.

I signed up when I was living in the Pasadena area, but am now in the process of relocating to the Salt Lake City area. That adds the challenge that like 95% of my rides will be on my Wahoo KICKR and all the lakes are too cold for open water swimming. However, it does give me the benefit of training at altitude.

I'm treating this as a B-race on my way to St George and Boulder 70.3s. It should be a nice early season kick in the balls.

I'm doing the Rose Bowl Half Marathon this coming weekend to dust the cob webs off.
  • i'm in.....fired up to see everyone this weekend! My first 70.3 so first and foremost looking to race smart and execute!
  • I'll be coming in from Detroit for the race.  Having a little swim, bike, run fun on our vacation, followed by some golf!  Looking forward to warmer weather and some sun.  Since all of my training has been indoors, I'm just hoping that I remember how to ride my bike when it's actually moving!  Looking forward to meeting everyone at dinner Friday night or after the race on Saturday!

  • Totally bummed -- I won't be able to do Oceanside. I singed up before I knew I was moving out of state. Ambitiously, I thought I could (1) make a last to trip to California to get the remainder of my possessions, (2) collect my family, (3) have my daughters 3rd birthday party so she can celebrate with her CA friends, and (4) do Oceanside.

It became clear that something had to give, so out goes #4. I still have St George and Boulder to look forward to. Hope to see some of you out there.

I have a reservation at the Oceanside Marina Inn on Friday and Saturday. It's a short walk to transition, at least according to the map. Anyone interested in taking it? Let me know ASAP as I'll cancel it tonight.
