  • I do never use rain coats - this piece will trash the aero benfit of your xxxx$ Aero bike in just a few miles image
Toe warmers are great! Put them on my shoes before race whenever there's a risk of rain. I don't use gloves when racing - too much time lost to get them on properly with wet fingers.
When it's really cold and wet I did use a plastic-bag under my race-suit on my legs and on my chest. This keeps off the wind totally and you can put it on before the swim and when it's getting too warm you just throw them away in the next littering zone!

BTW - I was at the race course yesterday and everything is totally fine - no construction zones, no bag/rough tarmac
  • do you wear long sleeve top and leggings? I don't know about fitting stuff in tri suit ...and arm warmers under wetsuit.... I've never done that before...  wonder how that would work?

  • I used a LG Speed-Bolero under my wet-suit in 2 races and I was totally fine with it in both races.
Per design this thingy isn't meant to be warm so that's most likely not what you are looking for!
At the moment I'd assume the weather will be fine this year ... it's just no possible to have a cold-rainy race day 4 years in a row image
  • the lake is looking warm! Temp during the day about 9 to 19 degrees celsius...Nice!
  • Sure you checked the correct lake Patricia? We faced a massive heat-wave over the last 2-3 weeks here in Austria and almost every single lake I know (including Zeller See) is now above 24°C.

The good news is that this heat wave will end by this week and with wind and rain the water temps typically drop significantly within a few days image
  • So as we are all on the same boat I guess most of us executed their race rehearsal this weekend (preferably on Saturday).
Let us hear how you did ... all the good and even more important all the ugly nasty little details image

I'll start first off to get this rollin' image

My plan was to ride the exact same route I did last year which is pretty much a copy of the elevation profile of Zell (just a notch steeper all the way through) and then run right beside the Drau river on my beloved totally flat and perfectly paved bike path.
I packed my bike and everything I needed into my car on Friday evening so I could start out right after breakfast.
Well that was the plan ...
at 6am when I woke up it was raining cats and dogs - no way I would go outside for a ride just to catch a cold or crash on the steep descend - NO WAY. So I checked the weather forecast for Sunday and it predicted to be even worse ... damn story
When there's no easy way out you sometimes have to take the ugly one - in my way it was the trainer down in my pain-cave.
I unloaded everything from my car - loaded the bike onto the trainer and off we go! First 30min was ok - I build effort up to Z3 and held there easily. Then my plan called for a 30min effort at about 90-95% to simulate the climb ... OMG this was terrible. My HR went through the roof ending at above 170bpm. Right at that point the rain suddenly stopped and even the sun broke through the clouds!
This was my call for a special "Transition-Training"!
I unloaded my bike from the trainer, loaded it with everything I had for hydration and nutrition, helmet on and just leave that pain-cave for today image
Outdoors I finished the bike portion on a pretty flat road holding effort at around 270W much more easily than it was indoors for the last 90min (HR was 153bpm).
Back at home after 2:30h having no idea how many miles I covered and knowing that my TSS value must be incorrect for this session I was still facing another "little" brick on my way ... there's nothing like a paved, flat route that I could possibly run here.
So I just grabbed my fuelbelt, headed out of the garage and hit the start button on my Forerunner.
I ran on a pretty loosened gravel path collecting quiet some elevation at an effort level that is WAY above what I could handle for a full 13mile run on race day but I knew that the route was also much more challenging as it will be in Zell so I just kept on the gas for 7k.

In the end it was just another really hard training day and I know now that my nutrition strategy is perfectly fine (maybe I've to drink a bit more if it's very humid on race day).
  • Wow! Great workout!
  • No race rehearsal for me...I am on my 2nd of three - 3 week builds for IM Louisville. I drove up to South Georgia Friday night for my granddaughter's birthday. But first on Saturday morning I ran a whopping 2.8 miles with 1 at threshold, then went out for a 97 mile bike ride. This morning I left on my bike travelling south on US41 paralleling I-75 until I eventually cut over to an exit where my wife was waiting. She was able to stay longer with her sister and then shot south on the interstate and got there just 10 mins ahead of me...then drove the rest of the way back to Tampa, FL. One more week of Ironman build, then taper for Austria, then another 3 week IM build before tapering for 2 weeks for Louisville.
  • can you all put your info on the event sheet?
    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1n1qBU5AOjYzbNZ9e8DWHNRcNCasV29RxUJX65pSZWso/edit#gid=161
it will make it easier to touch base.

also don't forget to call your bank and you cell carrier about being in Austria... and get 220 electrical converters and an extension cord unless you plan to compete "naked"
  • I couldn't access the Google spreadsheet. I'm at the Steinerwirt hoping to get rested tonight. My bike bag didn't arrive but the airline plans to deliver it sometime tomorrow. My wetsuit is also in the bag.
My training stalled for several days last week while attending my sons wedding at a remote mountain camp in Washington. But the weather is beautiful here and I'm looking forward to meeting people.
  • check out this weather!

If you have a phone number I can put it on the list. Looking forward to meeting you, Ann!
  • My cell is 541 619 3760. I'm using What's App.

    Ann
  • Patricia - those highs are much higher than accuweather is forecasting. Race day is 57-84. Still a lot warmer than I was hoping for. Seems everytime I go to Europe the weather is much warmer than what they had been having right before I arrived. It will still be a far sight cooler than Tampa is right now! Looks like you are staying in the hotel across the lake from Zell. Are you with EST?
  • yep. cooler than Austin for sure! Looking forward to it! packed arm warmers but I doubt I'll need them. did not pack my coat from Canada!
  • I have added your stuff to info sheet.  also, if you download group me, Coach Patrick will usually put us all in touch with each other.

  • Wish I was there with y'all! Have several local teammates that made it to Austria, as well as a few doing the 70.3 the day before!

    Best of luck!
  • Looking forward to meeting up w everyone in Zell am See. Will be in town tomrrow afternoon.
    Safe travels
  • Leaving tomorrow - be there Thursday PM. Is everyone going to the welcome dinner Friday night? Would be nice to meet up there, but we need to know how to find each other in the crowd.
  • My bike and bag arrived, both crushed. Jenn Smith posted photos on Facebook oh the pieces.
  • Ann - I am so sorry to hear that. I hope you can find a rental to complete the course. What airline crushed it and what type of bag?
  • Man, that sucks! My friend Jen had a similar issue (she arrived, bike did not) when doing the full Austria IM. She rented and did well. also, go on the slow twitch site and post what happened. folks will come to the rescue if at all possible. I'll send a notice to my friend to see what she had to do. If clothing or other issue I'm happy to share... I'm short and thick though and you look tall and long...
  • on a happier note, sort of..... a lady racing at Escape from Alcatraz had her bike stolen on arrival. She rented a road bike and won her age group image we will figure this out... also I did similar thing at Buffalo Springs.... my home insurance replaced my bike
  • she said....
As for damage, she needs to contact the airline she flew (originating airline.) If her bike is not repairable, rent a bike. Keep all receipts either way, repair or rental. The airline should reimburse her. It took me a month or two but United did pay for my rental and a few other costs as I had to buy shoes, etc. ...

I am waiting for her to tell me where she rented from but being on the ground I am thinking you'll be in a better place to figure this out... good luck! just another reason to get a better bike image
  • What a bummer Ann but I'm sure you will get a great replacement bike for rent!

Just for the record - actual water temperature is now at 68°F / 20°C

Will travel tomorrow cause it's only a 2h drive from here image
Hope I can make it to the team-dinner on Saturday noon image
  • Just got here last night. off to discover the town!
  • Stefan

Having trouble finding bike. Do you know of a bike shop that has rentals and will deliver to Zell?

    My email is anndvn@gmail.com

  • I contacted my friend Jen again as she only said she rented from a local bike shop... not very helpful info!

  • anyone staying in Thumbersbach?

This is way the heck out there!

  • Jen said....
it was a bike shop in Klagenfurt where IM Austria is held. I think you are about an hour or so north of Klagenfurt. Have they checked with the Ironman officials in the Expo area? They should be able to help.
