910XT data fields for swim training

I was blessed with a 910XT from my wife for Christmas.  I've had a 310XT previously, so now I have some swim stuff to look at besides time and lap times.

What do you have in your fields for swimming?  I count strokes pretty religiously already per Coach R.  Any tricks/tips recommended?

Thanks.  JL

  • @Jeff- great gift - you'll love it. I have 2 screens set up, one for indoor lap swimming, and the other for open water swims, although they don't vary much. I like to keep the OWS very easy to read so that if I'm training and stop out in the middle of nowhere, I can read the data fast.
It's been awhile since I've looked at those screens (one benefit of being in the OS image, but I keep it fairly simple and I think this is what I use:

    Lap swim (4) - time, avg/pace, distance, last length/stroke

    OWS (3) - time, avg/pace, distance
  • IMO, swim training is all about intervals. Like Jeff, I count my strokes all the time, in the pool or OW (been doing it for 40+ years now). I don't need Garmin to guess how many strokes I;m taking. So all I have on my Garmin Fenix2 (like the 910 for swimming) is the time of the lap I just completed, smack in the middle of the screen. Just above, the total workout time, and just below, the interval pace, although I never look at that, as I can much autocopmute the pace/100 for almost any length swum from 25-800.

I hit the lap button at the start and stop of each interval I do in a set, and check the interval time while resting @ the wall.

The one thing I miss using a Garmin instead of the old Timex I used in the pool, is an interval counter - meaning, tell me how many times I've hit the lap button? I have a *little* trouble sometimes remembering how many intervals I've done in a set.

  • It's been so long since I was lap swimming I've forgotten my screens!! The key ones are total yards for the workout (so I can keep track of where I am in the workout overall), current interval time (so I can time the rest intervals), last interval pace (/100yd). I have another but can't remember it.
  • It's been a while since I've swam, so I had to pull out the Garmin to look it up. I have Last Interval Time/Distance/Pace on one screen and Current Interval Distance, Time, Pace on the other. I generally keep the "Current" screen showing as I swim because I have a lot of trouble counting laps and the Current Interval Distance keeps me from messing up. The key for me is to use the stop/lap method at the end of each interval.
    - I hit the wall and hit Stop
    - Validate that I did in fact do the right number of laps (and see the time)
    - Then hit Lap
    - Once the rest time is up- I hit Start again.

If for some reason I'm double guessing that last set while resting on the wall after I've hit Lap- II just ll switch to the "Last Interval" screen.

I have all the other data stuff like Efficiency on another screen that I usually don't look at until the end of my workout.
