When Are You Getting to Madison in Septmber?

I am about to book our tickets to Madison. I figure I'll get the fares posted now (quite low) in case the volcano debacle makes prices triple.

I can't decide on whether to come in on Wed or Thurs. What are you doing? In FL, I always arrived on Tu for the Sat race, and liked the extra day to decompress, etc. But it is a lot of time to be away from my puppy. Keith will follow on Friday in any case. I'm leaning toward arriving Wed.

  • I am arriving Wednesday. We have a studio suite at Residence Inn (West). Not leaving until Tuesday.
  • OK- I'm at the Residence Inn (West) as well, but ugh, I haven't figured out when I'm arriving yet. Joe is trying to decide if he wants to drive (by himself, he has family in Cincinnati and would stop there for a few days to visit- take my bike there/back while he's at it). I need him to settle on that decision before I book flights. I do know that I'll likely stay through Tuesday as well, unless I can find a late flight back Monday night. I've flown back the day after both IM's in the past and really regretted not being able to go to the awards celebration or just relax afterwards.
  • Wednesday and leave Tues. Mutiple hotel reservations, including Residence Inn. May end up dowtown in favor of family logistics.

  • Josh and Bill will be arriving on Friday or Saturday in minivan with lots of support paraphernalia! We'll stay wherever we can find a cheap room and dedicate ourselves 100% to supporting the chicas (and making fun of Rich)! Home on Monday morning!
  •  We get there Thursday night and leave Monday.  Darn new job with no vaca time.  We are staying at the Clarion on the race route next to the Energy Center.  Should make it easier for the family to shuttle back and forth.  Actually, my one daughter will be volunteering because she loves doing the special needs bag on the bike ride, so hoping the other two volunteer as well.  Verona is so much fun!!!  The last attempt, my husband came in on Saturday and he took the train from Minneapolis to the Dells and I picked him up there.  It's about an hour away from Madison and a nice break from the melee of the race stuff.  I think he might do that again this year so that he doesn't have to hassle with taking vacation time too.

  •  Hey...just had a thought...I wonder if the families that are coming to support would like having a hospitality "tent" somewhere on the course.  We have an easy up that maybe Archie and the girls could set up on the course somewhere for EN'er family members to hang in.  Maybe RnP could hang a banner or something.  Out in Crossplains or maybe around the Special Needs bag area in Verona.  There is a nice little parking lot across the road from that and you can exit and go through the road blocks if you go out early enough to miss the bikers.  Only issue would be getting back out.  You would probably have to wait until most of the riders had come through the second time.

  • Arriving Thursday a.m., leaving Monday.

I am on this exact schedule!

  • I believe we're Thur-Mon, but....I could be wrong. Dave is the travel planner. image

  • aww guyz who are coming to support! why that just warms my heart... gosh golly. no way am I gonna miss it. Yes there is an EN tent that RnP normally set up. never saw the thing while I was racing IMLP but I heard it was out there! I love the award banquet and have stayed after for all of my IM, when is it?? Monday at lunch? or dinner? anyways, I will be there! I love hearing the pros talk and one final hurrah and I love that highlight DVD! I also have a dog this year!!! and so does Gina... smile. but he will just have to wait for me... now when do I get there?? okay for LP I got there 5' before the EN dinner on Thurs,, way too close for a sunday race, I felt rushed on Friday...but of course I hadn't seen the course either til Friday...so I would love to drive up on Wed. but this year having done the camp the Thurs might be good too. I felt rushed at LP and not as organized trying to find the grocery store, my shipped bike, the course, renting a car and the like....and not enough time for course recon. I also had to move hotels and husband came in day later!

so Linda,, if you fly in on thurs then you get there for hotel check in and maybe packet pick up (I didn't last year at LP) and then the dinner leaving you with packet pick up on friday, gatorade swim and any course recon, bag packing, saturday is bike check in and then relax.... which is doable considering you will have seen the town in July. Basically it is $$ to stay that extra day (Wed) and logistically with the family back at home and dog...so either day will work. if you go on Thurs just know at camp that you will have checked out location of everything
  • Addendum:  We may be Thu am- Tues am. Pretty easy to get there before noon on Thu.

  • Bill, Matt, Josh- I just LOVE that you guys are gonna be there for us! It's another reason I'm doing this race no matter what my calf says about it!!

Getting to/from Madison for me is going to be an all day affair which is why I'm thinking Wed arrival also. I'll probably book flights after our camp in July- that will give me a better idea of how crazy the travel will feel (keep in mind, it's a 2 hour drive just to get to the airport for me).

Gina- I'm also going to be nosing around for a cheap/close to downtown place for race night. I'm happy being away from the venue for most of the week- and not even that worried about race morning. But I know I need a hot shower ASAP when I cross the finish line or I turn into an ice cube (doesn't matter how hot). And I REALLY want to be at the finish line for the folks who cross at midnight this time. I've crashed and missed it every other race (including IMLOU where I was a sherpa!) and I really want to see the final hour!

Of course, I might be the one crossing at midnight this time around too- so another good reason to have a bed waiting for me close by! HA HA HA!

Sheryl- I love the idea of a Family Tent.  I know R&P will likely have their setup at mile 18.  But I also think it would be awesome to have a place for our families somewhere else on the course (esp the bike course).  Gives us all 2 different spots on the course to look forward to instead of just one.

  • Theresa, Abigail and I will be there as well. Probably Early Saturday through Monday afternoon. I'll be out on the bike course looking for you guys and Abigail and Theresa will be on the run course.
  • Just made flight reservations!! Arriving 11ish Thu am and leaving 11ish Tues am.

  • Arriving Thurs and leaving Monday for me.

Love, love, love that you boyz are coming to cheer us on! I can't wait!!
  • Ok. I will talk to the family about the easy up out on the bike course. My oldest daughter is the perfect "cruise director" for this activity. I'll put er on it.

I'll chip in. Not to spend the night, but to have a place to shower after. That sounds like heaven. Think about  it and lemme know. OK to say no. image

I'm down the hill from race site. My shower is your shower.

  • Tix are booked. Coming in late Wed. pm; out on a 9 am flight on Tues. Keith coming in on Friday. I can't believe I just booked that, and I haven't even started training for real. image

  • I am driving up arriving Thurs leaving Mon pm (or maybe Tues am... pending how I feel). I would also be more than glad to chip in for a room close for shower, clean clothes etc. GREAT idea!!! I've always ending up heading straight home after. I may end up going up Wed... just not sure abt vacation days and expenses!
  •  I'm coming out as EN Chica cheerleader and Sherpa. Not sure of exact days (probably Friday- Monday), but hoping to get a room close to race site. My shower will be open for anyone that wants

  •  There's a good chance I'll be doing a Branson 70.3 Race Reh on Saturday staying through Monday to sign up.....

  •  Ok, just booked hotel. Right on capital. So shower/hang out available for after race to watch finish. staying Thursday to Tuesday. Now or airline. If only Southwest flew into Madison. Really don't want to have to rent a car. My room has 2 double beds i anyone else is looking for a room.

  •  Hey...where are you flying into?  I can pick you up.  Hey..you know what.  If you fly into Minneapolis, I can pick you up and drive you to Madison with me (about 4 hours) but I have to come back on Monday :>(.  If you fly into Madison for sure I'll get you from the airport to the hotel.  If you want to stay till later in the day on Monday I can take you back to Minneapolis then.  You could fly out Monday night or stay at a hotel near the airport.  Anyway...let me know. I can give you a ride so that you don't need a car.

  •  And if you want, Tracy, I can bring my cruiser bike too so that you have a way to get around town a little.

  • I was having the same thoughts as LindaP when I saw her post. Tracy, Beth, or Nemo- I will pay for the chance to shower as well. I will be shivering moments after finish and need to change ASAP, which is likely in a nearby tent. But the shower so I can stay near the finish would be PERFECT.
  • Uh....I'll be the one ya'll will be at the finish line watching for at midnight....so I'll just head on over to my own room and shower....hahahahaha. Ya'll all better be there waiting with a bottle of Moscati Asti!!!! (I'll provide)
