Vince Lucey's Micro Thread

Hi Patrick,

Its time for me to interact as I have hit my first obstacle in my Nov OS.

I have been following the plan well and have seen the results, my vdot has gone from 41 to 44 on my last test. Christmas training went well as I was at home and off work. I did my run workout on New Years Eve and had planned to take New Years Day off as we had a party on New Years Eve. I got up on New Years day feeling bad but originally put it down to the festivities. I started to feel worse instead of better as the day went on so knew there was something up. To cut a long story short I picked up a chest infection and have not been able to train since. My question is where do I pick back up when I feel better. I'm still a bit chesty today but may aim to do something tomorrow. Would you recommend going back to full workouts or ease back a bit?

I also have a second question. My local Tri Club have started swim lessons 2 times a week Monday and Sundays. I need to improve my swimming and my clubmates have said it has improved their swimming as they have employed a good coach. The Sunday session is early 7.45 am. Could I work these into the OS and if so how would you recommend fitting it in.

Regards,

Vince

  • Vince, I hope you are well -- or, rather, not as bad as I fear with this cold! image I recommend first 3-4 workouts are for TIME, not INTENSITY...and then we can try to push it a bit come the weekend to see how that feels? Rest is best, and the re-entry is more mental than anything else...let's just be smart and make sure you feel more GOOD than BAD so this doesn't drag out.

As for the swim, you can do it on Sunday AM before your run session no worries (just keep it to no more than an hour and plan to fuel the run properly out of the gate). If you can only get in one session on Sunday, then I'd still want you to stick with the Run, or give me some alternatives for the workouts...let me know.
  • Thanks for the reply Patrick,

I was able to train on Tuesday and did the bike workout on my new turbo. It went well and had no ill effects. It was late so I skipped the hill run.

I did the run workout on Wednesday and after doing a warm up run was able to do the intervals. I did 0.25 mile repeats as I was previously doing these as 0.4 mile repeats as I was thinking metrically. I think I'm right saying there's around 0.22 miles in 400 yards.I had to ease back on the pace of the steady run on the way home as my Zone 2 pace was giving me High Zone 3/Zone 4 Heart Rate on the flat. I usually run on pace alone but there are hills on my home so I wanted to adjust for the hills by HR. Anyway I was able to finish my run, keeping HR as close to Zone 2 as possible and seem to have no ill effects today. I will probably just do the Main Set of the Bike tonight and continue as normal from there if I'm feeling ok.

My plan for the swim lessons is to do them on Monday and Sunday and run after the swim (lessons are definitely less than an hour) and take Friday as a rest day. I will reevaluate after OS and Swim Camp.

  • Vincent - Welcome "Back" to training! Great adjustments to keep you on track and GOOD CATCH on the metric difference -- yes, we are looking for 1/4 of a mile of effort. If you run an 8:00 mile, this is a 2:00 interval (if we consider time). So .22 is just about right!

I think you'll see your HR adjust a bit as you get back into regular training and your routine. Please keep me posted!
