Need road bike tire suggestions please

Entering year 2 and doing my first half-ironman distance this year.  I want to buy new tires for my road bike; specialized dolce.  Looking for good tires without busting the bank.  I did some looking on Amazon but have no idea what to buy.

Thanks, Nicky

  • For racing, I use Continental Grand Prix 4000S. For the trainer, I use Vitorria Zappro Pro Home Trainer tires, they last forever. For training on the road, I use either Continental Gatorskins (bullet proof) or whatever is on sale. For each, I replace as soon as I see noticeable wear (like my running shoes).

The 'breaking the bank' threshold is highly individual. Most non-endurance folks think what us tri/bike geeks spend on a bicycle and associated accessories is silly. Good luck!
  • I race on the same tires Roy mentioned....Continental GP 4000s.  I have a pair of Continental 4 seasons on both the TT bike and the road bike.  They have lasted forever and very rarely flat.  I don't really care a whole lot about the "ride quality", although they are noticeably better than what I used to minimize flatting when I first started cycling (Maxxis ReFuse).  Those were like riding directly on your wheels.

I have been very happy with the 4Seasons and they are well worth the cost (I think they were ~$65/each).  Lots of folks train on Gatorskins....not sure how much difference there is between the two though.  I use the same "guide" for when to replace as Roy, or I change when I get a couple of flats in a row.

  • BTW in Continental I check the 2 dots in the tire when it almost level to the surface I replace the tire.
  • Conti GP4000 for training and racing outside!!
No need for any tire on my turbo-trainer image
  • Conti Gators on my training wheels (which I replace at the beginning of each year), Conti GP4000s on my race wheels.
  • I also use Conti GP 4000s. I use them as my training and racing tire. I replace them about once a year. On the training I use the Vittoria trainer tire. That thing is indestructible

  • I can't add anything to the suggestions above except that you should get on the probikekit.com mailing list because they have those tires on sale quite often for about $90 for a pair with tubes.
