  • @Roy I hear you. My Dad went to U of Ala and most of my Mother's side went to Auburn - needless to say they are now divorced. I plan to make it to at least one Super Bowl with my son (bucket list). It's all a matter of what your priorities are. This is my year to check Full Ironman off the bucket list so I know where I'd put my $8k this year.....
  • Only had 45 minutes today to get my run in. And it was awful. Watching 3 kids by myself this weekend wore me out. And it meant a disappointing run today. Oh well, there is always next week. Enjoy the super bowl everyone.
  • Long run done.  First mile felt like crap, but then I really loosened up and had one of my best runs in a long time.

2mi w/u, 2mi Z4, 1mi Z1, 1x2mi (1/2mi) Z5, then 3mi Z2.  11 miles in 1:31.  Perfect weather here in San Antonio for a run today.  Now to watch the Superbowl, with minimal interest in the outcome!

  • Good thing I know how to suck it up and get it done. The first 4 miles really sucked - my calves were super tight and not feeling good. Finally when I got to my first mile repeat @ 9:20 - the pain/tightness went completely away. I can't believe it takes that long to warm up. I am going to post on med forum for any ideas. I have orthotics already...and these are new ones - same mold....so no need for break in.

Miscalculated my miles and added an extra mile repeat..also did a .5 TP as a warm up. Also I did a few out/backs to warm up and ended up running 12.5 miles - Guess was subconsciously thinking of the SEAHAWKS!!!

    My splits:
Distance Avg Pace Avg HR Max HR
    0.5 11:35 142 177
    1 11:19 122 172
    0.5 9:30 143 149
    2 9:50 142 152
    1 9:20 143 150
    1 9:13 141 147
    1 9:15 141 148
    3.29 9:54 139 147

WOW HR seems low for my repeats! Think I need to go back and look at those for last week.
  • @Roy-LOL-the thought that went through my head on the plane was 'wow, that would buy me a P5 and maybe some new race wheels'. I know, football is important to almost every American but me. I have several local friends FBing selfies of themselves at the game
(And I'm dying to know how much their tickets cost!).
    BTW-loved Katy Perry!

@Bruce-welcome back and so sorry to hear about your flu and your daughter's accident-may she heal quickly!
As for flu and recovery, I had it about two weeks before you and the first week of JOS was rough-I couldn't believe how much fitness I lost. Look forward to your mojo in the posts
  • @Bruce sorry to hear about your daughter's accident.

I just punched the clock again trying to get in some run time. 25' total.

  • Completed yesterday's Z3/Z2 run. Wicked hard with cold temps and a chest cold.

Wasn't sure if I would have a run today. It would be inside the Y, because my lungs couldn't handle another coldish run. Kids had swim class so I had 50 minutes to get it done. Managed a little extra at 55 minutes. Warmup went well and so did the Z2 work. The Z4 intervals felt effortless. Sucked wind for a bit afterwards, but the running was great.

I had a technical issue, in that my footpod battery went out after mile 2. I had to pace the Z4 work the old fashion way, by time.

    2 mi @Z2 8:09 & 7:55 (goal 8:00)
    2x.5 mi@Z4 6:54 & 7:00 (goal 7:45)
    1x1 mi @Z4 7:19

I was too busy calculating my lap times, and then beating them that my paces ended up where they did.
  • Holy cow, I spend a few days offline and the place is shaking apart...

BRUCE, FEEL BETTER AND BEST WISHES TO YOUR DAUGHTER'S RECOVERY

AL, YOU ARE VERY LUCKY, SOUNDS LIKE YOU ESCAPED YET ANOTHER BIGTIME ACCIDENT WITH THE PROSPECT OF A FULL RECOVERY

    Wow.

  • Larry, sorry man but I can't help you with "Watching 3 kids by myself this weekend wore me out". My wife was at a "girls weekend" on the slopes in Park City this weekend and I had my own "girls weekend" with my 3 kids here. So I didn't have time to post on EN but did have time for:

    - Thursday night: 75' FTP bike 2x12' @ 1.03, 1.05 then 2x10'(1') @0.91, 0.93. http://connect.garmin.com/activity/686122457

    - Friday morning track workout in my second of the 3 coaching sessions I bought. Overall 8mi avg. 6:27/mi but elapsed time of 1:36 due to all the time talking to the coach. http://connect.garmin.com/activity/686125702

    - Friday night: 75' bike 4x4'(4') @110% (1.12, 1.12, 1.15, 1.14) then 2x8'(2') @0.95. http://connect.garmin.com/activity/686710610

    - Saturday morning long-run, 16mi @ 6:48/mi. I'll admit I got a babysitter to facilitate this one. http://connect.garmin.com/activity/686996380

    - Sunday morning 75' bike with 30' @z3 (first 15' 0.84, second 15' 0.90) then 2x8'(2') @ 1.01, 1.04 then 8' @ 0.92 to finish. http://connect.garmin.com/activity/687882907

    - Sunday afternoon 8mi treadmill brick @ 6:57/mi (delayed by ~3 hours from the ride due to my role as sole zookeeper). http://connect.garmin.com/activity/688034855

    - Sunday post-superbowl, 3 hours shoveling. Followed by 2 hours shoveling this morning. Uggh.

Now I'm all caught up on my workout posts I think. Overall 50.5 miles for the week running and managed to fit in 3x 75' rides all within 4 days and all good workouts. Rest day today!

Team JOS - Sorry I've been AWOL for the past month.  I got really sick with the flu the first week of Jan and it took me nearly 3 weeks to recover.  Didn't do any workouts for 2 weeks. I started a couple of easy workouts to build back into OS, then had a family crisis.  My 19 year old daughter was hit by a car while she was crossing a street.  Guy ran a red light & hit her in the crosswalk.  She was very lucky in one sense in that she has no spine or major head injuries, but her left leg was torn up badly. She had a 3 hour surgery to repair the lacerations and 150 stitches.  She was discharged from the hospital a couple of days ago and is moving about with a walker.  Tough to see your daughter who was becoming a beautiful young woman hobbling around like that. But she has started therapy and is on her way to recovery.

So now it is time for me re-start the JOS.  I guess I'll just call it the Feb OS.

I hope everyone is doing well and not getting too much fatigue.  Make sure you take those rest days.

Bruce, I can't imagine how difficult it was for your family. I'm glad your daughter is on the road to recovery. best wishes!

  • Week 4 close.  Saturdays ride went well was able to hold the times. The run was a different story. My legs just would not hold out for running.  i think the M/W/F @ 6 A. M. hour weight sessions are catching up with my legs. I decided to  walk the run for Saturday and forfeit the Sunday run and rest. Week 5 and ready!

  • Matt, that is impressive - all while watching the kids. Either your kids are older than mine are - mine are 6, 4 and 1 - or you are much better at keeping them occupied / entertained than I am - which is probably true either way!
  • A bit older but similar: ages 9, 6 and 1. Lots of work to keep them occupied!!
  • @ Bruce,  Thoughts and Prayers for a speedy recovery for your daughter.   @ Matt, very impressive getting all that done and being super dad!

Really feeling the fatigue in todays run,  but hit the numbers and certainly getting better.

  • Bruce hope your daughter is doing better.....

After 4 weeks of a sunny runs - it was raining today...but not cold. Can't complain about getting wet when others are in freezing.

Thrilled with my splits - 9:16,9:13,9:13

My calves were good tonight too. YIPEE. I stretched...which apparently helped. or it could be the compression socks.....who knows but I'll take it!
