Mitchell's 2015 Macro Thread

Rich,

Really appreciate putting together the training plan. I watched the screencast and it was very helpful.

Couple things I wanted to point out / update. As you surmised, I was not planning on doing both IMLOU and HITS Havasu. That would be ambitious. I would be doing one or the other. However, now that IMLOU is sold out, my friends and I are looking at IM Cabo on October 25th. I know it's roughly the same time from but I will need to adjust my schedule for that. Any thoughts on tackling that as a first IM?

Also, I really want to jump in to the Out Season training program but I may have jumped the gun a bit. It's looking like I won't be able to hit the ground until next Monday 2/9. Lastly, as someone with minimal biking and swimming experience, do you advise I move straight to the traditional Out Season program or focus first on some skill-based workouts?

Thanks again.

Any thoughts on tackling that as a first IM? Ironman selection is 100% about the timing of the race, ie does it work for you, vs the course itself. That said, I don't have any experience with this event but I know we have some race reports in the Race Report Forum.

Also, I really want to jump in to the Out Season training program but I may have jumped the gun a bit. It's looking like I won't be able to hit the ground until next Monday 2/9. I don't think skills work on the bike is required. Just start riding your bike, I think it will good experiment to see how your current fitness transfers over the bike. That is, that's really not much you can do wrong on the bike. See the chat I'm doing tonight at 5p PST where I'll be talking a lot about this and other topics.

    Thanks again.

  • Rich,

Thanks for all the help. I had an initial delay getting started and signed up for a race but am all set to go now. I am signed up for IM Cabo on October 25th as well as the Olympic Distance Monte Rio in Napa on May 31st.

Over the last 4 weeks I have shifted my training from my crossfit background to more swimming, biking and running but have not started a full program yet. Looking forward to that and taking advantage of all of the other EN resources (nutrition guides, technique guides, etc.)

    Thanks again

Cool. I did a good bit of dirt biking in northern Baja over the winter but never made it down to Cabo. I've got some good resources for roadside tacos and where to buy gas out of milk jugs behind some guys shack

  • The roadside tacos and post-race margaritas are half the reason I switched to Cabo

I submitted a new Season Roadmap with the appropriate races and look forward to getting back in the saddle asap.

  • Been tracking the OS program well. Had my first race of any kind this past weekend and Coach P gave me some great pre-game / nutrition tips. It was a HM with about 1,100 feet of elevation gain over a few hills. Finished in 1:43 for a 7:43 mile pace. My Z3/HMP is 7:48 so definitely felt good about it.

I wanted to get your thoughts on approaching the swimming. The OS program hasn't called for any swimming days since I started but I've done a few sessions on my own and it's definitely the area I need the most work. I've read / listened to a ton of advice (from EN and elsewhere) and am definitely going to adopt the 80 / 20 rule approach. I know there is a ton of low hanging fruit just on body position and form but I'm sightly concerned I need to start ramping into those drills soon. I transition to the short course plan next week to prepare for an olympic distance race at the end of May, but I'm worried that if that plan dives headfirst into long intervals, etc. I won't be ready from a swimming standpoint. Any thoughts there?

Also, is there a way to see what each of the training programs looks like? Right now my roadmap says OS -> Beginner Short Course -> Beginner Get Fast -> Beginner EN*Full. Is there any way to see what those programs look like without loading them into my current planner and going week by week?

    Thanks as always.

  • Rich - I am thinking about adding in a HIM (Santa Cruz 70.3) this summer. It coincidentally falls exactly on my first race rehearsal weekend. Should I adjust the rest of my season roadmap to train for this? Or just use Santa Cruz as my rehearsal?

No, no changes needed to your TSR. However, (1) recommend you do an HIM RR about 2-3wks before the half and (2) you'll need to do that first IM RR. I recommend you do it the weekend after your HIM, so in wk16 of your IM plan.
