Torn Calf Muscle

So I went to the Dr Today and he said I have a torn calf muscle take 2 weeks of of running on top of the 2 weeks I already took off.  He said Phys Therapy wouldn't do any good so no prescription.  Stretch and heat pack daily cycling is okay as long as no pain.

This happened on Tuesday 1/20 and didn't try running until Friday 1/30 (10 days off).  I only got about 6 mins in and felt the pain again so I stopped and walked home.  What is your experience with this and what exercises/home therapy did you do?  Is the Dr realistic with another 2 weeks off of running.  My A race is 3/28, Oceanside and at this point I am not sure I should even do the race?  Thanks

  • I'm so sorry. You really have to take care of your body. I've never torn a calf muscle but it sounds like one of those things you can't hurry. Eat well, sleep well and you'll give yourself a good chance at healing quickly.
  • I tore mine last June, it was not until August before I could do a run-walk. Event then I had to fight the pain on long runs. Do what the Doctor tells you to do or you can hurt it worse and you will be out of your race completely.
  • Lot's of us have been there before. This is an injury you cannot rush; failure to comply simply continues to aggravate it.

Tackle it day by day. Rest as best you can and make an assessment regarding your race in 3 to 4 weeks.
  • Chris, as a physical therapist, I would recommend to go by feel and not by time. You will likely need at least another 2 weeks of no running, but don't assume that when those 2 weeks are over you can run again. Since this happened 2 weeks ago , begin with gentle strengthening, improving the blood flow to the area, gentle massage to break scar tissue. Before you resume running, this injury must be completely healed, should be able to 20-30 fast walking pain free, pain free with strengthening and plyometrics.

So sorry to hear about your injury, Chris.  Please let me know  if you need recommendations for good PT or sports medicine people in our area.  I do believe taping and ART (around the injury) may help.

  • Thanks Jan.  Currently I have no pain while walking, it is tight in the morning when I get up but once I am moving it is fine.  Can you recommend any strength/stretching exercises that I should be doing albeit you haven't diagnosed my injury........

  • Dana,

Who locally does ART that you can recommend?  I only know of one in Los Al, none in Long Beach.
