When to Schedule Yoga & Massage During Training
Just trying to get some input from EN on Yoga/messages as a part of training weeks.
When is it best to schedule Yoga into your training week?
When is it best to schedule a massage into your training week?
I remember for college not to get a massage 24 hours before a hard workout. I am not sure if that is still applicable today.
I live in an region where weekly massages are very affordable. Given the mileage on my body and softtissue/durability issues, a massage is something which I would love to work into my program if possible.
I have been doing Yoga once a week for the last 6 weeks and it has done wonders.

Massage - when I have time to fit it in...all other considerations are secondary.
Yesterday was a good example. I had a very hard run in the morning. Was able to fit in a massage in the evening from 7:25-8:25pm. I've had this guy for years and he lives in the neighborhood and comes to my house with a portable table. So after he left, I was on the drainer at 8:45pm for a 47 min hammerfest. So much for that advice about waiting 24 hours either way...I broke the rule on both sides and don't believe it hurt me at all. In fact, I felt great during an easy run this morning.
My other contrarian practice is that I won't get a massage within 5 day of a race...either before or after. I think massages right after a race are counterproductive.
For me, I've been taking Yoga and Pilates at my local gym, once each weekly, for the last several months. I've just worked it into my routine, and now it's almost second nature. Granted, I'm no advanced yogi or anything, nor is the gym class super-challenging, but I've found it good to loosen up my tight hips and hammies, as well as strengthen some of those supporting muscles that are the first to fatigue. That, and I proactively do PT at least once every 2-3 weeks.
From my experience, personally, I'll never get a massage in the two days after a long run. Just too painful for me!
For massage, I have a lot of trouble fitting it in because after a really good deep tissue session I need 24-36 hours of recovery time. Given the number of workouts I do, I find it really hard to preserve that time.
