Alvin's Macro Thread

Hey Coach. How should I approach PTC events in relation to EN training?

1. PTC Saturday Rides: Some of these are longer than what are in the EN Plan. Cloudburst for example is coming up in a couple of weeks. Is it ok to still do these rides or should I be shying away from them or cutting them short? I much rather ride in a group than on my trainer. I also think I need the hill work as I've lost some bike fitness over the winter.

2. Big Bike Week: This event happens during HIM wk13 - Int for me.  I was thinking of doing this event. I've never done it in the past. Does it sound right to you?

3. NPR and PTC Bricks: I do like doing the NPR ride on Tuesdays although attendance was sparse this last year. What is your opinion on these? Should I just stick to the plan to keep the weekly training order?

I don't mind missing these kind of events but I would miss the camaraderie.

You'll notice that I and several other EN members aren't regulars at the PTC rides . The rub for me has always been that what should be a 3hr ride will take 4hr+ with all of the regroups, admin time, etc. Also, PTC, because Lynda has been driving that train too long, just schedules rides that HIM athletes just don't need to be doing in February. Using the Cloudburst ride as an example, you don't need 3hrs of ride time that will take you 4-5hrs of clock time due to the very, very heavy admin nature of those rides. An HIM athlete should be off the bike by 10-10:30a for a 7a start. That's why people race HIM's in the firstplace, because the training time is more manageable. Unfortunately, PTC's Saturday rides are VERY IM-ish, with regards to total time committment, but with a fraction of the training stress you'll get by riding more focused.  To answer your question, I recommend you consider capping your Saturday ride at 3hrs ride time, 3.5hrs clock time at the most, and then basically going very, very hard within that fixed volume.

    2. Big Bike Week: This event happens during HIM wk13 - Int for me.  I was thinking of doing this event. I've never done it in the past. Does it sound right to you? Yep, that works.

    3. NPR and PTC Bricks: I do like doing the NPR ride on Tuesdays although attendance was sparse this last year. What is your opinion on these? Should I just stick to the plan to keep the weekly training order? NPR is a great session. I haven't been to the brick in a while but I get the social component and the potential for it to be a great training event if the right folks show up. But you'll find that these PM sessions will really start to bump against the AM stuff. I "think" the brick might be on Thurs these days? When it was on Wed, it was basically a no-go for me, given the Thurs AM long run. I just couldn't make that happen, the long run was more important than the brick so I didn't do the brick. Likewise, NPR crushes me for doing any quality work Wed AM. And since I'm very, very bad at doing stuff in the PM (ie, it doesn't happen) I'd have to really shuffle things around to make NPR happen and still make everything else happen.

Good discussion over beerz with the SGV EN Sleeper Cell

I don't mind missing these kind of events but I would miss the camaraderie.

  • Hey Coach,

IMMT was hot and humid but got it done! Next up is Bonelli Oly on Oct 11th. Any suggestions on what path I should take?

    Hey Alvin,

Congrats! I read your RR to PTC, nice work!

Please go to the Triathlon Season Roadmap tool, under the Training tab above, to give me your '16 schedule as well and I'll put all of this together for you.

  • Hey Coach,

After St George I had initially thought I would end my season with Vineman Half and skip IMMT. Now thinking that I may do it IMMT after all. I've been on the Half Plan scheduled for Vineman July 10th. How should I change this up if I decide to sign up for IMMT on Aug 20th?

    Hey Alvin,

You should move over to the IM plan right now, setting it to end on IMMT. Then if you still decide to do Vineman you'll just do that within your IM training plan. Good luck!
