Mary 2015 Enroute to IMFL!

I've not signed up yet for the July HIM originally placed on my race season plan- would it be best to forgo this HIM and race Olympic instead (they have an Olympic Distance - this is my home town, so my thought was long training day in considering the HIM distance)?

The East Tawas HIM on 70.3 I'm set on, and have signed up for the Lake Carlyle Olympic in May.  Just trying to figure the most bang for my training this summer.  I see that I'm stacking multiple plans, want to be sure I can jump into them appropriately.

Appreciate your input as I decide on which way to go

The HIM in July is good timing for you, as it essentially splits your season into to two halves:

    1. Get fast, race an oly, transition that over to HIM fitness and race an HIM.
    2. Then start training for your IM after ^this^ HIM.

So no changes needed, the schedule you have is good

  • *shouldn't be a problem not having done formal out season plan right? Been doing 2 workouts per discipline each week for last 4 weeks
*how to manage plan with a vacation scheduled? March 3-12! Will be running and maybe some OWS ( hiking, beach walking, exploring) but no cycling.
*I AM READY TO GO-lets DO this

*shouldn't be a problem not having done formal out season plan right? Been doing 2 workouts per discipline each week for last 4 weeks Because we're having this conversation in Feb and you're racing such an early season Olympic, I made the decision to put you in the Short Course plan, which will basically serve as your OutSeason. The training plans are very similar, in other words.

*how to manage plan with a vacation scheduled? March 3-12! Will be running and maybe some OWS ( hiking, beach walking, exploring) but no cycling. Please read this for our guidance on adjusting the plans for vacation and travel.

*I AM READY TO GO-lets DO this Welcome aboard!

  • My short course PR is 2:50 and my HIM is 6:17 - both in 2014. It's been recommended that I do the Beginner Short Course and Beginner HIM. I like that I'm starting here - but is there a point in which the intermediate plan may be more appropriate? I know it's week 1 - just want to maximize my training and have a great year! Of course, staying injury free is numero uno!
  • Sure, we can have that conversation at some point. However, one of the dynamics we've seen over the years is that people entered the team with perspective of what "hard" is, usually framing everything through volume. That's not how we work here. All of our plans include quite a bit of intensity so it's best to start you on the conservative side until you've learned our perspective on training and work.

Which is to say that our Beginner may not be as Beginner-ey as you might be expecting

  • Awesome. So fR so good?? running slower prob good for me anyway!
  • Well I meant in my ez runs. I've never done 'speed work' so will be interested in seeing how I can improve and NOT get injured ??
  • In my experience, becoming injured through training is largely the result of a decision(s) to (1) not listen to your body and (2) follow a training plan into a brick wall. So if you feel something in the plan is on the edge of injuring you, circle back to us sooner rather than later so we can have a conversation with you about adjusting things.
