Blown TIRE on trainer

I guess I don't even know my own strength in the out season.  2 nights ago was riding along on the trainer and started to hear a funny noise from the rear wheel, then it got louder, louder, louder, followed by a ear piercing bang similar to a gun firing.  Got off of the bike, tire pressure was still good, rolled the wheel around to see this on the tire:

In addition to shredding the tire there were a bunch of other small "bubbles" nearby.  I suspect the popping noise was an air bubble that got overheated and burst.  Interestingly, it didn't go all the way through the inner surface of the tire - but couldn't tell until it was completely unmounted.  So I of course did what any other person would do.  Found an old tire, remounted and finished the work-out.  Then went online and ordered a new tire - this time a conti trainer tire.  Shipped via Amazon prime - best thing ever, arrived today and remounted and rode.  It's a good thing it wasn't a race, it took forever to get the tire off the wheel.  Those trainer tires are just too tight at the rims, nearly bent a plastic tire lever in the process.

Is this just a dead tire from wear?  Is there something else to think about?  I do keep the flywheel pressed up against the tire...maybe I should loosen it after every ride.  I've been riding on this tire for approx 16 months.

Happy training

I have my roadie hooked up on my Computrainer full-time.
I always loosen the roller after every ride and have never had a problem.
I don't want the tyre deformed by the roller all the time.
  • Like Peter, I also release the roller after every ride. I also unhook the "skewer holder thingie" that attaches the bike itself to the trainer. I leave the bike loosely mounted on the trainer.
