Brett's 2015 Macro

Coach Rich,

I'm looking forward to my 1st season with EN and joining you at IMWI.

I understand everything I'm asking is very subjective and relative to the work I put in, but I'm trying to establish goals and set expectations for the upcoming season.

My ultimate goal is Kona. Why not shoot big, right?

My question is where should I set my expectations for this year, and what kind of improvement is reasonable to expect.

I did IM Canada in 11:15 last July (s- 1:12, b- 6:07, r- 3:45).

As a little background, I'm 25, 145lbs (raced IMCA @ 135), FT Power is 196 and FT pace is 6:42.

I'm happy to share more info if needed.

Thanks in advance!

    Hey Brett,

Sorry I missed this. Your question(s) broad and, in my experience, are not a very valuable exercise other than to dream about what could happen, I suppose. That is, you should be focused on executing the workouts as best you can each week, learning the fine points of race execution, and then apply those tools as best you can on race day.

It's not uncommon for athletes to experience a 10-15% FTP gain in their first year of focused training with power, and going from a 1:12 to ~1:08 swim is possible with focused attention to technique. Gains on the run are harder to define, as I don't know your running background and so much of the run on race day is dependent on proper bike execution and doing the right things in the first ~8mi of the run. If you wanted, I'm sure you could find a calculator on the web somewhere that would help you estimate a bike split on the IMWI course based on a goal FTP but, at the end of the day, these are all just interesting exercises and not really valuable.

In summary, get strong, get light, get smart, learn how to race Ironman, and drive all of this the best you can on race day.

  • Coach Rich,

    Hope all is well.

I just finished my first race of the season- HITS Marble Falls 70.3. Overall it was a good but HOT race. I wasn't sure where the best place to post this would be, so I'm starting here. I'd love to get some feedback on my race execution, especially my bike leg. I have all my Garmin data and would be happy to share.

Let me know if you can help or if this is a better question for the micro thread.

    Thanks,

    Brett

    Hey Brett,

Congrats! Please post a race report for us in the Race Report forum here. You'll see many examples of how to do this but, in general, detail is good and be sure to ask whatever specific questions you have, to help begin to guide a useful discussion.
