Feel like I'm crawling on the swim. Fins?

Just started back training after a LONG period off and am back in the pool and following the preseason schedule.  I'm swimming about 2:40/100m pace and feel like I'm REALLY swimming slow compared to the past.  And actually, I am.   So slow that I feel my technique is just terrible.  I don't feel smooth.  I don't feel like I'm pulling enough water or moving fast enough to create that nice little air pocket when I breathe.

Is it worth is, until I can swim faster, to use fins, if only for the sensation of feeling like I'm actually swimming?

Sure, but fins are also great tools to use while doing those drill progressions in the swim ebook.

  • Vic, you and I have been in the pool together several times. I have seen you swim. You don't need fins, and it is a technique thing.

I'm not some uber-swimmer or swim coach just a top 15-20% swimmer but I have decent fundamentals and a good eye for seeing what's wrong with adult onset swimming problems. I'd be happy to meet you at the LA Fitness and give you some tips. In addition you could recruit the services of Eric, Tanya, or Charlotte F. to help you out. Eric and Tanya are uber-swimmers and coaches, and Charlotte coaches kids for a living so she's great at teaching fundamentals. Tanya and Charlotte both swim at LA Fitness as well. I don't think Eric does.
