Mountain Bikes
I'm looking to purchase a mountain bike and need some advice. I'm not looking to break the bank and would like to keep it in the $750-1000-ish range if possible. This is just for fun and I'm open to either used or new.
Back in college (uh...this was a LONG time ago) I owned a Cannondale but with advancements in suspensions and other components I find myself a little overwhelmed.
Sizing recommendations would be appreciated too. I'm 5'10" and weigh 145 lbs.
Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Todd

So, where do you find out what size frame you need? Like so many other things on a mountain bike, there is no one perfect solution, because within sensible limits you can adjust your saddle, stem and handlebar to help make a slightly imperfect fit feel fine. We'd always recommend looking at manufacturers' own size charts but here are some general guidelines:
(Bear in mind that road, cyclocross and hybrid bike sizes tend to be 3 to 4inbigger for riders of the same height – something that confuses a lot of riders when looking through bike listings.)
From www.bikeradar.com but I'm sure there are lots of places to get this information. If you are going off-road you need to be comfy!

This previous thread might be a little helpful, if - like me - you don't know much about them:

First, what riding are you gonna do? Easy trails? Technical downhill? Focused on climbing? Figure that part out and then you will know if you a ridge, no suspension, or if you want full suspension, understand how much rear wheel travel you need.
After you create a needs list, get on eBay. Perfect for what you want.
wife and I each got one of these. wife at 5-8 got medium. both she and I needed longer seatposts. (got cheap ones) seem like nice bikes for the price.

Hey Todd,
I was thinking of selling my mtn bike, as I won't be riding it at all until after IMWI and I was thinking of upgrading the bike anyway. It's a 26er Trek full suspension that I bought from Dino about 1.5yrs ago. Size medium. I'm 5'9", 170lb so this will fit you.
As Dino said, it depends on what time of riding you'll see yourself doing, which is largely a function of the terrain you have near you. Around here, if you don't shuttle your bike to the top of a trailhead, we have to climb 1900-4000 ft on graded forest roads to get to fun singletrack downhill. So I've learned that a hard tail is probably better for me, given ^this^.
On the Trek you can lock out the front suspension and "mostly" lock out the rear (it still moves a bit) but I feel like I lose a good bit of energy transfer on these long climbs, which is I why I would want hardtail. But if you have access to rolling terrain, downhills, and more technical riding, full suspensions is the way to go, I feel.
Anyway, let me know and we can work a deal. Dino's bike can be like the EN village bicycle that just passed around from guy to guy...
