Groin-area muscle injury

I have some sort of injury in my groin area. It came on a
week ago and despite literally zero workouts for the last week it came back
right away when I resumed running this week.

The symptoms are only when working the muscle, for example,
I feel the discomfort the most when sitting in a chair and clamping my knees
together. Whatever the muscle is that is responsible for that, I think it is
the one that is the culprit. Only on the right side.

After the layoff I ran 1.5 miles Monday, 6 miles on Tuesday
and 6 miles today. By today the onset of the discomfort was immediate upon
starting the run but in all cases it has been manageable and if the doctor had
told me to run "as tolerated" I would keep going for sure. There has
been some other muscle soreness I think due to compensation.

Doc is tomorrow so I'll see what she says and
keep you posted, but if you have ideas in the meantime let me know…in
particular if there are any things I should mention at the appointment that
will help the doctor do the diagnosis.

  • @Matt, sorry to hear this.  I badly pulled a groin muscle once, and it was pretty awful (I was out flat for several days).  The one thing I recall the doc and PT telling me is that those muscles take a long time to completely heal.  It took weeks before I could walk straight, up/down stairs, and move laterally without any discomfort.  But once I was there, I could start to slowly jog, stopping immediately if there was pain. Had to be very, very patient to get back to some of the longer-stride Z3-4 runs.  Hopefully your strain is very mild and that your doc will have a good game plan.  You've got tons of time before Moo, so don't fret.  Just heal.  Mike
  • Matt, I hope I am wrong, but you could have a sports hernia. I had one that ultimately required surgery though most can be handled with rehab. Mine affected the adductor (the muscle that pulls the leg in) and caused pain elsewhere too. It only impacted the side where I had the hernia. Be careful on pushing it. That is what I did which resulted in an abdominal tear that required surgery. I hope I am wrong, but it sounds a LOT like what I dealt with (and chose to ignore for way too long).
  • @ Scott, yes I was worried about that for sure. But notice I am using the past tense. The doc ruled that out. In fact it was an easy diagnosis for her and she thinks just a muscle strain. As Mike pointed out, it may take some time to resolve so in the meantime I'll take it a bit easy although can still run within some specific guidelines she spelled out. Quite nice to hear although of course the proof is in the pudding and we'll see how quickly it heals up.
  • Good to hear Matt. Listen to the doc and I'm sure you will be back to full speed in no time!
