Tucson Epic Camp 2015
This is an open invitation for drop ins, casual participants, or those interested in the 2015 Tucson Full Epic. Details:
What it is:
-A block of bike, swim and run between March 28 and April 10 in Tucson, Arizona
-Work that isn’t a structured EN event per se, but has nonetheless been given the blessing to post about here by the coaches*.
-Mostly biking, with run and swim. Generally, 4-5 hours daily riding, stepping back to 3 hours every 3rd day. And either run or swim (or run and swim) every day. Aim is 6-7 daily hours rollin', swimmin' or striddin'.
-bigger volume, not so big ROI, work.
-For those going the full epic, the goal of 60 training hours over 12 days.
What it isn’t:
-structured, official, or supported. This is just dude(s) / dudette(s) ridin’ in the desert. Then repeating.
-No Gold/Silver/Bronze package levels.
-No host hotel, no sponsored sling bags. But I can give advice about where to get a good room and where to find the best tamales in town.
What it features:
-The best riding / training in the US at that time of the year.
-occasional EN celebrity presence. Tim Cronk is confirmed for some 2015 work (aka riding for 2 hours, politely stopping 10mins to wait for me to catch up, and repeating.) Past years have seen Al Truscott make a special birthday guest appearance. Coach Patrick is reportedly on the fence for the 5th year in a row and it will just take one more RI snowstorm to push him over.
-I'll also work on getting rides hooked up with non-EN celebs: there are a LOT of people training in AZ at that time of the year.
-Tucson is ludicrously easy to get to: everywhere flies direct to PHX, and it’s ~ 90-100 mins by cheapo rental car to Tucson. Or, fly direct into Tucson.
-This year’s capstone will be the EN (Pen)Ultraman: Day 1, 10k swimming / 90mile biking; Day 2, 180mile bike; Day 3, 30+++ mile (or KM) run (exact distance tbd).
Post here with questions, endorsements, or if you want to come for a few days or the whole Epic.
--------
*The coaches gave a blessing to post this, but your first stop for making the most of your training and the EN experience is to always go with an “official” EN camp. EN camps are well-thought out, supported, developmental and give you very very good bang for your buck.

thanks for you recent advice on big bike and big tri weeks all sounds good.
and would like to join you for this big tri week. I actually have a week in that timeframe that I am doing a big tri week. but only a week off work.
was thinking of doing it in on the Big Island. staying in Kawaihae (which I think would be perfect location).
but with a day of travel at either end, though it would be more efficient to grind things out at home.
but I will keep Tucson in mind and let you know. I would be coming on April 3 or 4 (Friday evening or Saturday) and leaving the 12th (sunday).
where are you staying?
Robin, that's FANTASTIC to hear you might be in for some of this. I stay at the Sheraton (not the airport one ... the one closer to Mt Lemmon): it's simple enough, the rooms have a fridge, and it's a 2k jog to Fort Lowell pool. Not the best, but far from the worst. After Easter weekend, I think the rates go down to around ninety bucks/night with breakfast. I'll check, and will also see what I can manage with SPG member rates (edit: found it: $89). (an aside: this place spent bucks on upgrading their rooms when they had Desert League Major Ball teams in town - it was the hotel for Colorado in Spring Training - but MLB has moved out of Tucson entirely. End result is a pretty good hotel that is pretty hungry to fill room nights).
I promise to make it out next year - this year, returning from South America on March 31, just can't foresee being able to handle the turnaround.
