Garmin Connect - WHY?

I am sure this question has been asked, but I must ask. Why use this Garmin business at all? Damn near 75% of the time transferring from my 910 is unsuccessful, so I toy with it and eventually I get it uploaded. Then I get on Garmin connect, where I am unable to see the value of the presented data, which reminds me of a microsoft windows app. I am a trainer road person for indoor cycling, strava for outdoor. Do I really need another e-platform?

  • Agreed, Connect isn't great. I sync my Edge 510 to Connect on my iPhone via Bluetooth. From there my workouts auto upload to Strava. I never actually use Connect to review workouts, just as an upload mechanism.
  • The only reason I interacted with Garmin Express (the application which now feeds Garmin Connect) was for the initial setup for auto feed to my Training Peaks account and (as of today) Strava feeds. My 910xt transfers my swim and runs wirelessly and my 500 requires me to physically connect it to my computer. Now that the auto push setup is done, I do absolutely nothing with Garmin Connect. All of my analysis is conducted in Training Peaks.
  • Doug, I also do not use garmin connect for anything else besides uploading. (Most of the time) my data will transfer to Strava and TP and I will use that for review. I just do not understand how a company as Garmin makes all these great GPS watches and bike computers, but then have the worst software to review it on.

  • I use Connect as my go-to analytic for running. But then all I really want to know is my pace, HR, and cadence, which easily appears for each lap. I use poweragent which came with my PowerTap, for cycling assessments. I also post automatically to Strava, just to keep up with my teammates vis a vis sharing. And I have WKO on a little netbook, to follow the TP analytics over time. Finally, I hhave a training diary Ive been keeping since 2001. Trainer workouts go to TR automatically, and I still save data to Garmin Training Center on my Mac. So thats seven separate tracking modalities. I need Frodo's solution ...one app to to rule them all. Keeping up with all this takes about five minutes per workout, time I also use to change clothes, etc.
  • I like GC because is loads to the others for me.

Training Peaks is used to analyze power and track my TSS based builds and training blocks.

Strava is fun and tracking improvements on my favorite routes and segments.

GC has very little value unless run and pedal dynamic are your thing....
  • I like the visual on Garmin Connect actually. If I send a link with a workout to someone, I will almost always send a Garmin Connect link because it is more intuitive to understand the workout.
  • I only upload 70.3 and IM bike files to GC. Other than that it has no value. Don't use Training Peaks, Strava, and all the other nit noy out there. Here's how I review a run: finish run...look at activity on my Garmin...see total miles and average pace. Then look at each mile split. Analysis complete before I'm even inside the house. Bike file review - don't do it all except for FTP tests and a few other key rides. If indoor ride, I use power agent otherwise GC but again, only for a key ride. I keep summary stats in a spreadsheet. Move along folks...nothing to see here.
