Feedback for me on my power?

I'm totally new to using power...can you guys let me know how these stats look (average, good, sucky, etc)?   Of course I could do some reaserch online, but I'd rather get your input so I can see how I measure up.  PS - doing my first IM in October.  Thanks!

30 min computrainer ride, rolling course w a 6% climb:

10.07 miles,

261 watts,

3405 wts/kg.

  • Hey Kalletta,

I'm from the OP too, just living in FL for the last couple of years.  But I digress.  I've never used Computrainer, so can't directly interpret that data.  Did you go hard all 30 minutes or, for example, warm up for 15, kill it for 10 minutes at 261, cool down for 5?  Or are those average watts over all 30 minutes?  Normalized watts across all 30?  Or max watts at some point?  If your average or normalized wattage over all 30 minutes really was 261 - a huge number - then you probably already know that you "measure up" pretty well because you're probably used to leading off the bike in just about every race you've raced in and you put up bike splits that equal or surpass a lot of pro women's splits.  I hope that's the case because I'd love to see you unleash that power in your first IM.

Regardless, the key to training with watts is identifying your threshold (testing), then steadily training at a certain percentage of that threshold (Coach R's TSR for you will guide you), re-testing to identify your new (likely higher) FTP, start training at those new percentages, repeat.  Go bury yourself in the Wiki for a week and read everything on training with power - it's a treasure trove of great info.  And never hesitate to come back to these forums to ask - there are a ton of people far smarter than me who are happy to help.

Racing with power is a different animal altogether.

If that's the case, and you want to get the most out of your CompuTrainer (or any other power meter) while training, then you should start with a perusal of the EN wiki pages on Power Training resources:

    http://members.endurancenation.us/Resources/Wiki/tabid/91/Default.aspx?topic=EN+Power+Training+Resources

Just start working your way down from the top link. When you get to #6, the Power Webinar, note that most ENers who have bought it say it was the best $59 they ever spent on any triathlon related item.

If you get stuck, or confused as you learn the jargon and try to understand the theory and applications, come back to this forum and fire away with questions.

  • Thank you for the feedback! After looking back at what my Garmin vector caught, it said my NP was 245 over that half hour ( that was a full 30 of work after a warmup). That seems encouraging! Now I will head to the wiki and start reading up!image
  • I was a newbie to power last year and remember having no idea what all of it meant. Listen to ^^ these guys for sure... they are good! Make sure you update your profile in whatever platform you upload your data to, i.e. connect, starva, training peaks. Garmin will set the default FTP at 200, which is fine until you get dialed in on your true zones. Accurate weight will also play a huge roll in the data you will see post workout. It's a ton to learn up front, but I can assure you, it is well worth it. Have fun!
