112 plus 13.1 this weekend

There's a 117 ish mile ride on Saturday...it's probably too fast for me anyway, and then a 13.1 on Sunday which I would like to do. I thought.. geesh, I can't do those back to back. And then I thought...well you idiot you are going to do 112 + a marathon on the same DAY in 8 months!

Oy. In any event, I believe I'll play golf on Saturday and run the half on Sunday. Perspective.

  • Yes, absolutely NO reason you need to be doing that now, unless it sounds really really fun and what you really want to do. Don't need to ride more than a couple hours at a time until 12 weeks from your race. Focus on speed now, don't let the distances of the IM scare you into thinking you need to prove now (8 months out!!) that you can cover that distance. Trust the plan, and enjoy your life NOT training for an IM now. Plenty of work down the road. Remember, coaches don't want you thinking you are training for an IM until 12 weeks out!
  • Couldn't agree more with Rachel. The volume will come and when it does you will be thankful you opted against the 117/13.1 combo early. The fun part of training for an IM is the gradual build...it all comes together at the right time. Good luck!
  • Thanks guys. At a point in my life I would have thought I was a wuss not to do both. But at 50, I just have to be a bit more careful. The 8 hour ride on Valentines Day was a wake up call. I did it, but it was too much too soon and my left knee let me know it!

There's nothing better than this team. Cheers!

  • OK had a cold/flu thing and a quick out of town trip. NO workouts this week. NONE. I'm jogging that 13.1 tomorrow if I feel at all well. I hate to miss them, they are a series and it's really the only time I see some of my friends here.

  • Sorry, late to this party. I agree w the other EN Chicas. I def fall victim to trying to do too many things that sound cool. I know we try to have fun with our fitness but sometimes I get caught up in the thinking "oooh, that sounds cool/fun/epic" only to realize I've overbooked myself or compromised my real training. Balance is good.

    Feel better soon!
  • Well, in the end... I did NEITHER. Today I felt crappy so I slept in, got in the hot tub...put on my stuff and ran/walked/hobbled @ 5 miles. I feel better having done SOMETHING and I think I'll feel better in the long run than another day in bed.
