hoka question

I ran in the hola conquests last year and liked them for longer runs. But I had problems with the tongue on one shoe cutting into my ankle. I have never had this problem with any other shoes and am wondering if there is another model with a stiffness and similar drop to the conquests that has a padded tongue.

Any ideas? I could go find a retailer and ask I suppose but thought that someone here might know.

  • I have the exact issue! Tried cutting out a "v" in the tongue but it hasn't resolved the problem. May try more. In the meantime, I'm wearing socks that go over my ankles.
  • I liked the cliftons. I used them after I conquered my conquests. They were great.
  • Jimmy, Cliftons are great, but be careful with your history of Achilles issues. When I hurt my Achilles, I had to sideline the Cliftons and Newtons. They low drop just put too much strain on the tendon. Switched to high-drop Asics, pain went away.
  • The padded tongue has returned in the B4.
  • mike - that was what I was most concerned about with a shoe change.
I'll call hoka and see if they have some input.
  • I tried Cliftons to see if they I would feel less sore after long runs. I had no issues with different toe/heel rise (my regular shoes are 4 mm, CLiftons are 5 mm). My things hurt just as much as with my Suacony Kinvaras.  And the "hard" black rubber on the heel wore down after only 100 miles. That doesn't happen on my Kinvaras, so I doubt it's an issue with poor form.

I remain a steadfast Kinvara fan. They have three great attributes: a low rise of 4 mm, enough wide cushioning underfoot for me, and a low weight, 7.3 oz. They also last 4-500 miles, and cost less than $90, depending on the discount I get (usually 15% off of $90-100). Newtons and Hokas I've tried, I did not find any advantage to either, and they cost 50% more. Gimmicks like extra cushion underfoot or lugs under toes just seem to add to the weight and the price, but don't provide me with any more speed or comfort. Remember the studies which show the rate of injury is inversely proportional to the cost of the shoe.

  • thx al! I tried kinvara last year. I found them to be extreemly light and comfortable and very plush. But something about them made my achillies sore so at the end of the 30day period I had to return them. They certainly are popular and I really wanted them to work because the hokas just look like clown shoes to me...
  • I've been running in Hokas for the past several years and i have found that using Nathan Lock Laces helps to distribute some of the tongue pressure.  For sure this helped with the non-padded tongue, but i've found this helpful even with the padded tongue on the old Bondi B and on the recently released Bondi 4.  Not sure if the new conquest went to the padded tongue or not, but you might want to try pair of lock laces to see if this makes them more comfortable.

  • I don't think the new Conquest has a padded tongue.
