Knoxville 70.3 - Anyone done it?

I've searched the forums with no luck finding a race report or advice on the bike and run course for Rev3 Knoxville 70.3 (now Challenge Knoxville).  Someone on the team must have done it, right?  Can anyone provide some tips and intel on the bike and run course?

  • Hi Don! I did this race in 2013 and am more than likely going to be there again this year. My take on the course:
-swim - it's in the river and nothing really epic to note other than it was FREAKING cold when I did it. Like 58 deg I think? The run from the river to T1 is fairly long-ish on numb feet. LOL The transition area is in a parking garage which was nice for when it was POURING rain.
-bike - for sure some hills in there. NOT a flat course, but manageable. You cross a few sets of train tracks, so be careful on those. Seems like I remember the climbs in the later miles on the bike course to be steeper. Just be patient going up them. There are some sharp turns coming downhill so just pay attention so you are prepared to turn and not just bomb down them.
-run - hilly as well in parts. you run out of T2 and are on roads for a little bit, then you run on a bike path that parallels a river (which was flooded when I did it!). that section is fairly flat. You exit the bike path and run an out and back section through a neighborhood that is super hilly, then head back along the bike path. Some flat sections to cruise on when you're not in the hilly subdivision.

If you have specific questions, feel free to fire away! I'm writing this in a bit of a rush, so forgive my horrible grammar. :-)
