Chris Davis Training Q and A
Rich-
Thanks for loading my plan! I am excited!
A couple of questions-
1-I do not have a Power Meter on my bike.....yet.
I have been riding some CT classes, however. I also have a CT at home, although am not very fluent in its true capabilities.
On 1/23, I did the standard 20 minute test after 10 minute warm up. This yielded an FTP number of 239, which is what my series of classes have been based on. My avg HR was 159. So I have that data as well.
We are scheduled to test again next Wednesday, 3/11. This will give me a new FTP number and a new avg HR.
Can I use these results for my test? If so, do I understand correctly that I need to use 95% to calculate my zones? Is that what is called "normalized power?"
I will still not have one the 5 minute test, so will be lacking VO2max numbers.
2-would you recommend and sprint or olympic tris before Raleigh. I can probably find one or two if so. I like racing.
Thanks, Chris

It's likely that our test is different from the test you're doing for your class? In EN World, it's important to do the 5' test before the 20' test, as the additional purpose of the 5' test is to fatigue your legs before the 20' test. So when you test again on 3/11, I recommend you do our test, as written in your plan.
That said, the results of your test are "good enough" for training purposes. That is, for the purposes of training it's fine if you're calling your FTP 259 but it's actually 265 or 255. At the end of the day, you're going to ride within a range anyway, that can change from day to day, and it's just not worth getting too crazy on nailing it down to the specific watt.
