Confused on Half Mary Pacing

Reading the wiki here:

Determining Your Goal Pace, Option 1: A 5k vDOT Extrapolation

For a 5k vDOT, we subtract 2.5 vDOT points.
For a 10k vDOT, we subtract 2 vDOT points.
For a 13.1 vDOT, we subtract 1 to 1.5 vDOT points.

Why would I subtract off "1 to 1.5 vDOT" points of my every day training 13.1mi time?

Seems I should be able to do at least that time or better in a slightly tapered race situation all things being equal?

My recent benchmarks have been:

Date Test vDot

12/19 5km 49.7

1/11 13.1 48.0

2/1 10km 50.1

Taking 2 off the 10km time = 48.1 or right at what I ran the last 13.1 in (1:34:54).

Thinking about pacing this one 1-2' faster... perhaps target 1:33:30 and if anything left in the tank at the end try to push it.

Thoughts?

  • Is that a wiki article on pacing an open hallf Mary or a 140.6 marathon?
  • Pretty sure it's about open marathon and half/marathon pacing.
The video also is talking about how the 13.1 vDot test end of OS is more correlated to your performance in 140.6 and 70.3 races so a good data point to have.
  • David, I was confused as well when I read that wiki article a few weeks ago when I was preparing for my half marathon. I too thought it was strange to subtract Vdot points from a pace I had been training at. So I didn't and used my current zones to pace my half Marathon. From following you in your prep for FL70.3 it seems like you have been able to hold your zones in the long runs. I would go with current zones in your race.

Good luck and go for sub 1:33 ??
