Impingement syndrome

About 4 months ago I started getting a really irritating shoulder pain. I think I got it while sleeping on my arm. In any case it didn't go away. I wasn't swimming so figured it would clear up. But it didn't. A couple of weeks ago I went to the doc. She diagnosed it as impingement. My dad knew all about it since he had it and it ended up with 2 rotator cuff surgeries over 3 decades. At the moment I'm on a prescription anti-inflammatory NSAID (Oxaprozin) and it feels a lot better. Does anyone have experience with this injury? I feel like resuming swimming would be problematic and I'd love to take care of this before April therefore.................

  • Have you had PT? That's usually first line treatment.
  • No pt yet. The doctor actually remarked that a lot of the underlying causes (e.g. poor back muscle strength) didn't seem apparent.
  • yes had same thing last year.

a good physical therapist turned things around.      exercises to open the shouder helped.

and she clued me into some basic body posture items.    sit and stand straight without exagerated lower back straightness.     shoulders down and back.    open the chest.   etc.

  • Interesting. I've been having some issues that sound somewhat similar to. I've been going to a chiro and it had helped but certain movements just "don't work" anymore. Nothing that I can think of caused it, but since Matt mentioned sleeping on his arm, the lightbulb appeared. Lol. I was a huge right arm sleeper (extended, under the pillow and head) but that's one of the movements/positions that "don't work" anymore. Def better over the 2x/week for 4-ish weeks so far and now moving into some easy strengthening moves with cords. I will need to get in the pool soon so I'll let u know how that goes...
