Gearing for IMMT

I'm currently running a 50/34 crank and 11-23 cassette on my tri bike.   Those of you who have knowledge of the IMMT course what would you recommend as a more appropriate cassette? Thanks.

  • Coming from an 11-23, you'll have to get used to some cadence gaps, but I'd recommend either an 11-27 or an 11-28. You'll want the 11 for the downhill off of Lac Superior. And you'll probably want the 27 or 28 going up it. If you're a super strong climber, you could probably get away with a 26, but I've bought into the 'mo gears is 'mo better philosophy on courses with hills.
  • Thanks John,

My ego says I could handle the 26 but my 60 y/o body tells me to go with the 28!  So it's the 11-28 cassette for me. Thx again.

  • Hope you are part of the IMMT group. Lots of great posts in there, and I think one of them is on this very topic. John did the race last year and qualified for Kona there, so he knows what he speaks, but in future, the group might be a good place to check for topics.
