I did my Sat and Sun rides on Saturday due to work.  All the gadgets worked! (the sun was shining and I actually got a sunburn!)

so on the race day, do I calibrate  when out of T1 and on the road?  hard to calibrate in transition.... can't do the calibration with a thousand bikes around..... the Garmin will read everyone's power meter. ....

I think if you calibrate the day before you should be good. Only calibrate in the road when you are safe and if the numbers are whack!!!!
