Great Clermont Tri ( olympic dist)

On Sunday I will be opening my 2015 season with the Great Clermont Tri. I did a course recon yesterday, Strava file is here: https://www.strava.com/activities/268952999

As you can see there is about 850 ft of climbing including a few short and steep climbs, but also some gradual longer climbs. My questions is if I should ride with a disc cover and FLO 60 in the front, or go without the disc. Not sure if I will get a lot of benefit from it with there being some climbing on a relative short distance.

Bike pacing should be at 80-90%? Run pacing should be done how? I have not raced olympic distance in 2 years and am unsure about the intensity.

Thanks for the feedback

  • Not hilly enough to preclude a disk.
  • Bike pacing IF should be in the range 88% to 92%, and the run pace should be around HMP.
Not sure why you wouldn't use your most aero setup?
  • + 1 on Peters advice. Disc is almost always better. Run pacing: aim for HMP, should feel like 10K RPE
  • X3 ,Disc, IF .90ish, HMPish..... NOTE: you rode that course in 1:23 at IF .60 , raceday @ .90 will be a LOT less time.... The OLY is much closer to a Sprint , while pacing is important , don't be afraid to push and feel like your on the rivet from start to finish!
  • Thanks. Will go with the disc. I'm looking forward to racing at a higher intensity but also unsure of it. Have never done an olympic with power, so looking forward to seeing what the results will be

  • Thanks for the input everyone. Finished the Great Clermont Tri today with a new PR 2:22 and 2nd AG, 23rd overall Male. Very happy with this result, although I think a first AG could've/should've been within reach.

First, the swim was wetsuit legal. The water temp was 77.8 degrees. I brought a wetsuit but opted to swim without, because of limited wetsuit strippers being present. It looked like > 90% of participants did swim with a wetsuit. I usually feel comfortable swimming in open water and in crowds, but today I experienced anxiety during the first 5 minutes. I was totally fine before and as soon as we started it felt as if my heart was going to beat out of my chest, I was out of breath, my arms felt heavy and sluggish and in my head I was totally confued on what was going on. Thought that maybe knowing that everyone else was wearing wetsuits had to do with it, but don't know. Luckily I was able to find my composure after several minutes and had a decent swim, but obviously slower than the wetsuit guys.

Besides those 5 minutes I felt great the rest of the race. Bike IF was 0.896 and run was 6:49 min/mile avg.

Looking at the results online at the end of the day, I was 1 second ahead of the eventual AG winner coming of the bike. I lost it in T2. He had a 53 sec transition, I had 2:01. His run was 20 seconds faster. At the end of the day , he was 1:27 faster than me. This shows I obviously need to work on my transitions because my first was one was not fast either (2:10).

  • Oh yeah, you definitely need transition work and a flying mount if you aren't using one for sprints and olympics. Since that water temp isn't wetsuit legal for WTC then it is HIGHLY unlikely that the FL 70.3 will be wetsuit legal. Last year's cold blast in Apr was an anomaly.
